Leadership- A personal performance reflection
Leadership is often reflected in the way people behave rather than the title people hold. Some people consider leadership to be a born trait, however, to me, leadership is something that can be learned as well as earned. In what follows, I will reflect on the various ways in which my leadership qualities have manifested and how leadership opportunities have presented themselves to me and helped me develop into the leader I am today.
Producing change in others is not an easy task, especially positive ones. I am a social person and I like to hang around with my friends. However, influencing someone in a positive way is more than just talking to them and hanging around with them. I have been involved in direct mentoring as a part of a social program in my neighbourhood. While acting as a mentor, I was able to teach little kids some basic social skills and I believe that can count as a positive change since they were all fighting for toys and turns before but after my mentoring the fighting reduced a lot.
Another proof for my personal efficacy and influence in creating positive change is my experience from my job where I was able to facilitate the introduction of an important organizational change of reducing work hours for all employees, especially those with kids, through negotiating with the management on behalf of all employees. I believe it created a positive change in the lives of many employees.
I have always been a helpful person. I can consider one person that I helped was my younger sister. I and my sister have been close ever since we were young. She often looked up to me and this inspired me to take the role of a leader when it came to matters about us. Once she had been quite stressed about her exams, almost to the point of depression. At this point, I was able to help her overcome her stress and recover into preparing well for her exams. I think helping one’s subordinates when they are stressed or depressed is a part of being a good leader.
Another instance was at my workplace, we had a colleague who was very timid and often got pushed around by other employees. I didn’t like it and helped that colleague stand up for himself. This I did, by not helping him fight, but by helping him gain confidence and state what was right instead of taking others insults. As a leader, we are supposed to stand up for our subordinates and teach them how to do it too.
I have found myself develop certain leadership competence outcomes as well. I find myself having emotional intelligence and great interpersonal skills. I am emotionally intelligent in that I can understand people’s emotions. This helps me assess my colleagues’ moods, desires and wants. For example, once we had a project at work and there was a colleague who really wanted to do it. He didn’t ask for it, but since I knew of his interest, I recommended him for it. He was overjoyed to be given the chance to head that project. Another thing that helped me realize my talent of interpersonal skills was the fact that my team leader often selected me to be a part of the team to represent us to new clients. I was told that my interpersonal skills helped in creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere at meetings.
In my senior years at college, my juniors often looked up to me. I believe that was because I was usually good at what I did, whether it was sports or studies. I also had the habit of interacting with my juniors on the go, so many juniors knew me, even when I didn’t really know them. I believe, role models are people others look up to because they look perfect. I believe I was not perfect, but since others saw me so, they took me as a role model. As a leader, I believe I will have to create a similar impression on my subordinates. A leader not only has to lead others, he has to be good at what he does in order to be considered a leader.
As a leader, influencing others is not hard since a leader is already in a superior position. I have a sister who almost idealized me and so influencing her was never a problem. However, creating trust and confidence is a totally different thing. I have the confidence to create trust and respect within my close circles. However, since I do not have the experience to do so in a diverse group of people, especially those who I do not know, I am not confident and believe that this is an area I can develop in.
I have had the opportunity of organizing and leading a team before, so personally, I think I can handle leading a team. I led a team...
