Introduction
Today companies have realised the need to evolve and innovate to develop a differentiating factor from other competitive firms. It is important for the organizations to innovate and change continuously through new and different ideas to steer away from the competition. Some of the changes include new technological developments, new working and economic conditions and changes in the global marketplace. Some of the innovations discussed in the research include: servic
e, product, organizational, brand, process among others.
The report discusses the innovation at workplace within the context of business model of Singapore registered firm Ozbargain- which is an online grocery delivery service company, which runs its business in Australia. It discusses the workplace innovation at e-commerce business model and analysis the key systems, stakeholders, gaps and barriers among others. It analyses various methods to generate innovative ideas at the workplace. It begins with analysing the current situation and identifying the key stakeholders. There are various means to generate ideas, which are further refined with the active consultation of the stakeholders. The trial run of the system ensures that errors are not carried forward to the whole department. The final system must be flexible enough to incorporate changes at any level.
Context of this new system
· Objectives of new system:
A System is composed of set of components, which interact among each other to form a whole system. An innovative system in an organization can be a group pf people who interact with each other to exchange their ideas, skills or knowledge to perform innovative activities. Any new system must facilitate and encourage people at every level to generate ideas and work with enthusiasm and creativity. These systems might relate to human resources, leadership, project management, team management among others.
System objectives are important to measure the success of achievement of organizational goals. Some of the objectives for the new systems include: Improving competitiveness, generating more income, diversifying the business, developing workforce skills, enhancing customer service quality, reducing operational costs, changing the culture of the organization, winning projects, addressing operational problems among others (Alasoini et al. 2017).
· Analyses of current organisational systems
Analysis of current system is important to analyse the strengths and weakness of the system. At present the organization is top to bottom driven, which means that opinions and ideas are not taken from employees of all the levels of an organization, which inhibits the generation of innovative and creative ideas. The financial pay of the employees is also fixed and do not motivate to think and implement out of the box ideas as there are fixed tight deadlines for work, such strict scheduled work does not support entrepreneurial freedom which is necessary for creativity (Amabile and Pratt 2016).
· Gaps or barriers identified
One of the major communication barriers is the organizational hierarchy where ideas flows from top to bottom. In such an environment, employees do not feel motivated and this discourages the team-spirit in an organization. Another barrier is the limited infrastructure and resources with the organization. As Ozbargain is a relatively new organization, it has limited resources to spend in innovation, which requires long gestation period. In such organizations, employees should be encouraged to generate or create time for incorporating innovation into their business. Third barrier is the existing status quo or resistance to change among the attitudes of employees. It is important to build the culture of change among employees through introduction of fresh perspectives and experiences to broaden their thought-process. Fourth barrier is the Fear of failure. Organizations must acknowledge and reward employees for investing in innovative processes, however currently at Ozbargain, only those ideas are rewarded which have worked. This generates negative attitude of fear of failure in the mind of employees and discourages innovation and creativity. In order to develop an attitude of change, it is important for the top leadership to encourage employees to fail so that they work more without fear to succeed in the future (Camisón and Villar-López 2014).
· Current information available about systems
It is important to analyse the systems of other organizations to gather knowledge and acknowledge what is happening in other competitive systems. After knowing about other system in the marketplace, a firm can evaluate them within its own context. For such research, organizations prefer to evaluate competitor’s organizations which may be local, national or international, organization of similar size or structure or it may also be totally different organization having developed successful systems. For Ozbargain- an online grocery delivery system, it can learn from the similar successful systems such as Amazon or to totally different organization such as Google or Toyota. For example, Amazon has always developed an ever-changing workplace and created an all-round business model which began from selling books but has now expanded to include other consumer goods and even started the payment portal. Netflix has invested in analytics to provide personal choices to the users on the basis of their past searches and views. Similarly, Ozbargain can invest in analytics technology and cater to other consumer goods segment in the future (Caniëls and Rietzschel 2015).
National Innovation Systems is another way to gather information about innovation about workplace. NISs are the network of both private and public institutions, which interact with each other to foster creativity and innovation. The Australian Innovation System report gives the complete complied information about the innovation at workplace in Australia. This report can be referenced by the businesses to develop the innovative workplace model.
