Bring your copies of "My Genome, My Self", a pen, and a print dictionary (NOTHING ELSE). You must refer to both readings in your essays. You need to use MLA in-text citation as a requirement to pass the exam; these can be direct quote, paraphrase, or summary. You should have at least one such citation from each reading. Avoid over quoting, but at the same time, the test is designed in part to evaluate your ability to cite in MLA style. Any time you use the exact words from the reading, you must use quotation marks. Any time you quote, paraphrase, or summarize, you must refer to the author by his or her last name. For example: “With personal genomics in its infancy, we can’t know whether it will deliver usable information about our psychological traits” (Pinker 3). With the readings by Stephen Pinker and (author #2) in mind, write an essay in which you discuss (writing prompt). Be sure to include summaries of both readings that relate to your analysis. You mustrefer to both readings in your essay and cite in MLA style. Take time at the beginning of the exam period to plan and organize your thoughts. Leave time at the end to proofread and make corrections. You may use a print dictionary. The exam lasts 1 hour and 50 minutes. NO exceptions. On the day of the test: You may annotate (make notes on) your Pinker copy but you MAY NOT bring pre-written summaries either typed or handwritten. Any notes you want to make about the long reading must be written ON the long reading. You may bring a print dictionary but you WILL NOT be permitted to share your copy with another student. All test materials including the readings will be collected after the exam.
