Brent is a married, 28-year-old white father of four who nearly died after an accident at work involving a collapsed crane. A year after the accident, he is struggling to return to “normal life.” He has chronic pain and migraines due a neck/shoulder injury and he has trouble sleeping due to nightmares. Brent received a worker’s compensation insurance settlement, but he is worried about finances and whether he will be able to return to his high-paying job as crane operator. Brent’s wife is losing patience and is looking for work herself after being a stay-at-home mom. Overall, Brent is anxious and depressed and wondering if his life is worth living in his new body. He rarely leaves the house and tends to sleep all day.
1. How has Brent’s disability impacted the domains of his life: psychological wellbeing; physical well-being; social and interpersonal well-being; financial and material well-being; employment; and, functional ability?
2. What approach should a rehabilitation counselor take to help Brent improve his quality of life?
