Brainstorming Form
From the topics list provided, you are to select two topics and use this form to:
- write out the two topics you selected,
- Topic 1:
- Topic 2:
- narrow those topics down even more by forming a research question for each one
- Research Question 1:
- Research Question 2:
- answer those questions with a relevant, arguable thesis statements that you plan to defend later in the argumentative research paper. The thesis statement will be the central idea of your later research paper and it will tell your readers the stance or position you will both defend and counter.
- Thesis Statement 1:
- Thesis Statement 2:
The purpose of selecting two topics, two research questions, and two thesis statements is to have a back up in case the one does not work out.
Now, which one of the topics and corresponding research question and thesis statement is arguable, argued in sources with at least three reasons on both sides (for and against), and supported by facts on both sides? You have to do the pre-reading to answer this question. Once you know for sure, choose 1
of the topics above and its corresponding research question and thesis statement. Then, brainstorm by answering the questions below in
complete sentences. See the sample provided if you have questions.
Do not use the sample topic, research question, or thesis statement. The aim of this exercise is for you to explore, discover, and narrow down a topic, research question, and thesis statement before you even think of writing a draft.
Remember, the topic, research question and thesis statement you choose must be arguable with claims or reasons from two different sides or viewpoints with facts that support each of those claims or reasons. You will be arguing with facts, not ethics, or opinions. Thus, you must do the work of pre-reading sources before you begin to writing. Now, on to the rest of your brainstorming.

- Third main point of argument:

i.
II.
Opposing argument:
- First opposing point to point A above:
Rebuttal:
At least one source that supports your rebuttal A:
i.
- Second opposing point to point B above:
Rebuttal:
At least one source that support your rebuttal B:
i.
- Third opposing point to point C above:
