Code of the Street (summary)
It is the book that is written by Elijah Anderson and this is about a set of informal rules by which interpersonal relations are governed by these rules in isolated inner-city neighborhoods that can be distinguished by racial segregation and the lack of public and civil services.
Major issues are depicted by the Code of the Street in terms of the life in inner-city providing an in-depth analysis of the code of the street so this book can be regarded as an excellent source for the policymakers who understand the necessity for coping with the issues of inner-city as well as or the people who are committed for deleting the discrepancies between the American society and inner-city. This book also examined the lack of jobs that pay a living wage, to the drug usage, stigma of race also to the alienation as well as the lack of hope.

The author pointed out the fact that people who are residing in poor-city neighborhoods are always struggling financially and hence they always feel that they are distant from America but they are termed as “ghetto” or “street” which suggested the social types. Furthermore, the street and decent family tends to highlight two poles of value orientation. The people who are labeled as “street” and “decent” refer to their status (Anderson, 2000).
It can be stated that the inner-city black America is more or less stereotyped as a random place of violence, but in the inner city the violence is mainly regulated via an some rules that is also well-known code of street. On the other hand, decent people try hard to be a part of the mainstream culture but the real, racism, and perception that are encountered by them help to allow the oppositional culture. There is a vicious cycle between the street and decent people. The alienation and the hopelessness of a lot of young inner-city black women and as an outcome joblessness can be seen and by it, the violence is fueled that the people engage in. Throwing light on the above-mentioned discussion it can be stated that violence serves for conforming to the negative feelings a lot of black people and white people harbor towards the street people that legitimates the oppositional culture even more than ever as well as the code of streets in the eyes of a lot of poor young black people. Until and unless this cycle is broken attitudes of both sides will become violent which tends to claim that the victims white and black, affluent along with poor will be escalating.

Anderson the author, the code of the streets as he identified how the reality has negatively impacted the young people lives forcing them for growing up in the communities with failed educational, economic and judicial systems. Elijah Anderson was a professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. However, in a nutshell, it can be stated that the code is the part of street culture that demands that all people needs to be treated with equal love and respect. However, when we talk about respect on street then it is maintained and acquired with strong physicality as it is used as a force for threatening other people. The strongest people tend to survive. The individuals who are not a part of the street culture always gain respect if they stand fearlessly and push back the people by whom the streets are dominated and where the encounter takes place. Obeying after knowing the street rules can deactivate some of the situations in which violence can take place. Furthermore, the code of the street is like the state of nature and it is based on a force as it is described by a world-renowned philosopher namely Thomas Hobbes. Due to this particular reason, decent families start to teach their children at a young age and this teaching includes the code of the street as well as middle-class values.
