Theories of Personality
Defense mechanism is an attitude which segregates the individuals from events which are unpleasant in nature. Such
strategies are psychological in nature and helps the individuals to distant themselves from unwanted feelings of shame. It is an idea which comes from the psychoanalytic theory and can be observed as a psychological perception of personality which observes the behaviour as an interaction between id, ego and super ego.
This theory was proposed by Sigmund Freud and was stated that defense mechanism cannot be controlled under the individual’s consciousness. Most of the people acts without realizing the defense mechanism strategies. Further, defense mechanism is a natural form of psychological development process (Kendra Cherry; 2021).
The defense mechanism which I have experienced in my life are:
1. Denial: This is a defense mechanism which is being highlighted by Anna Freud. According to this mechanism, the individuals refuse to accept the genuineness. This blocks the external events from getting aware. If there are situation which are too difficult to handle, then the individual simply refuses by denying its existence. E.g., The signs of wife’s disloyalty towards him may be refused to be identified by the husband.
2. Projection: This is also a psychological defense mechanism where an individual attributes the undesirable feelings...
