Persuasive Discourse employs a combination of these three proofs—logical, ethical, and pathetic—and the same bit of writing can contribute to more than one persuasive strategy Logical proof—from the Greek word logos, is an appeal to the intellect of the reader. It consists of arguments—evidence and reasons—to support the writer’s main point or thesis. Ethical proof—from the Greek word ethos, ethical proof is concerned with conveying the good sense and good character of the writer. In other words, the writer is saying that s/he should be believed because s/he is such a good person. Pathetic proof—from the Greek word pathos, deals with the emotions of the readers. That is, in order to successfully persuade an audience one must get them to be sympathetic to your position. A writer needs to know how to arouse the appropriate emotions in the readers. As you complete your Persuasive Paper, you should try to use these three strategies to convince your audience to agree with your claim Persuasive Paper 2 Instruction Sheet Page 2 of 2
