Black women were an important part of the abolitionist movement, but they haven't received much credit throughout history. Although black women were working to end slavery they also understood that gaining rights as women was also something they needed. Sojourner Truth was an enslaved woman who was able to gain her freedom before the emancipation of slaves. She traveled and talked about issues of slavery but also spoke about issues that specifically affected black women. I posted a video of Kerry Washington reciting Sojourner's "A'int I a Woman" and a portion of another one of Sojourner Truth's speeches which I titled "Sojourner Truth on Black Women".
PROMPT: Watch Kerry Washington recite Truth's speech and read Truth's other speech about women's rights (the paragraph posted on Canvas titled "Sojourner Truth on Black Women)
Based on these two items, explain what Sojourner Truth means by "Ain't I a woman" - what ideas is she arguing against? and explain what her concerns are in the other speech.
