BIB-502 Understanding Jesus’ Death and Resurrection
In at least 750 words, at least 150 words per prompt, respond to the following prompts about the theological meaning of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Responses should be as concise as possible.
1. The Gospels link Jesus’ death to the Jewish Passover festival, not only because he died at the time of the feast but also because the Passover sheds light on the meaning of Jesus’ death. What was the purpose of the Passover lamb (see Exodus 12:12-13)? Explore how the Passover imagery helps us understand the meaning of the cross of Christ.

As the textbook indicates, the cross of Christ holds a place of prominence in the Gospel of Mark. Give one example in Mark of where the centrality of the cross is evident, and explain how it contributes to Mark’s understanding of the meaning and significance of the cross.

For instance, the curtain in the temple is torn in two; Jesus is crucified, while the murderer Barabbas is set free; Jesus is hung on the cross between two notorious criminals; darkness covers the land for roughly three hours while Jesus is on the cross; and the earth shook upon Jesus’ death. Choose one of these curious events and explain what it suggests about the meaning of Jesus’ death.
5. Explain the significance of Jesus’ resurrection appearances in the Gospels. Why is it crucial that Christians hold to the bodily resurrection of Jesus? Incorporate into your discussion the significance of the resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15.
