BIB-502 Major Themes in the Gospels
In at least 750 words, at least 150 words per prompt, respond to the following prompts about the major themes in the Gospels. Responses should be as concise as possible.
1. Briefly analyze Matthew 5:3 and Luke 6:20. What are the similarities, and what are the differences? Why do the differences exist? Do the texts mean essentially the same thing? Why or why not?
2. In Matthew 5:21-48 Jesus repeats the phrase, “You have heard it said . . . but I say to you . . .” Often what the Jews had heard was rooted in the law of Moses or perhaps a rabbinical misinterpretation of the law of Moses. Explain why Jesus compares and contrasts his teaching with that of Moses (or a misinterpretation of Moses). What does this tell us about who Jesus is and what he came to accomplish?
3. As the textbook indicates, the theme of secrecy is pervasive in the Gospel of Mark. Why do you think Jesus wanted to keep his messianic status a secret, at least before he died and rose again? How does this help us have a better grasp of his identity and mission?
4. The Gospel of Luke emphasizes that the good news of Jesus is for all types of people. List which types of people in the ancient world Luke includes in the saving concern of God and explore the implications for gospel ministry today.
5. Provide some examples of Jesus’ deity in the Gospel of John. Why is it crucial for Christian ministry that Jesus is God?
