Bia Sousa moved from Portugal to South Africa while she was in the tenth grade. Her schooling was comparable to the schooling system in South Africa. Her teacher, Ms. June Senekal, was worried about her social adjustment. She noticed that Bia was involved in a same-sex romantic relationship with one of the students in her school. The other students in Ms. Senekal’s class would often bully Bia, and exclude her from their social interactions. As the year progressed, she became distant and isolated. Ms. Senekal had a difficult time interacting with her. She decided that she needed to be proactive in finding a solution.

6. What could Ms. Senekal, as an individual, do to better equip herself to support LGBTQ students?
