Bentham provides a list of criteria or “seven circumstances” to measure the amount of pleasure and pain an action produces. Take any two actions you have recently done. list the one or two main pleasures and pains you believe each action produced. Now use Bentham’s seven circumstances or criteria to estimate how large each pleasure was, and how large each pain was. Now, for each action, subtract the amount of pain it produced from the amount of pleasure it produced. Now determine which action produced the greatest amount of pleasure after you subtracted its pain. What does this exercise show you?
