Thesis statement Death penalty in American judiciary system is effective in reducing all sorts of crimes and safe guarding the general public from any kind of harm. Discussion Death penalty is a controversial and an emotional topic for many individuals as it is associated with the death of the criminals. Due to the intensity of the punishment, it has been banned in two third of the countries all around the world, including several states in the United States. It can be stated that death penalty is a form of inhuman punishment as the lives of the criminals are taken away. It can be said that the form of punishment is very harsh as well as cruel and it degrades human dignity. With the death penalty, the cycle of violence keeps going on as the criminal who has murdered someone is being killed by the punishment. As per religious arguments, life is a gift that is given by the almighty and no human being has the right to take it away. Though there is not much evidence that helps in proving the fact that crime rates have reduced in the United States due to death penalty, it can be stated that it creates a fear amongst the criminals so that they deter from committing heinous crimes. Without death penalty, certain crimes like rape and murder would be continuously increasing in the society. It can also be stated that with the help of death penalty, the US legal system is able to maximize justice. Retribution is a vital piece of the discipline procedure. Without it, the loved ones of the unfortunate casualties just as the general population would not agree to that fact that the legal system has provided them with any justice. Death penalty creates a fear amongst the criminals Every human being has the fear of death. This psychology is used in death penalty as it is able to create a fear amongst the criminals so that they do not take part in serious crimes like murdering someone or raping a woman. There were more than 1400 executions carried out since the year of 1977 in the United States in order to tackle the tough criminals. In the year of 1976, capital punishment was legalized by the US Supreme Court and the criminals were punished with life imprisonment. It created a fear amongst the other underground criminals that such a notorious criminal was put to death by the legal system. It is a psychological thing that death would not be welcomed by any human being on this planet. In the mid 1980s, the arrival of death penalty was related with a decrease in the quantity of murders. As stated by Hood and Hoyle, (2015), in the mid-to-late 1980s, when the quantity of executions balanced out at around 20 every year, the quantity of murders expanded. All through the 1990s, the US society expanded the quantity of executions, and the quantity of murders dove. Since 2001, there has been a decrease in executions and an expansion in murders. With further research it was seen that with one execution there were less murders committed by the criminals. So it can be stated that with the help of death penalty, the number of murders decrease as the other criminals fear that if they get caught, they would be dead as well. With death penalty, severe crimes can be controlled With death penalty, the severe crimes committed by the criminals can be regulated. It can be seen that death punishment deters the criminals from committing murders and rapes in the US society. It is due to this factor that most of the citizens of the United States consider this punishment to be just. New York has become a much safer place to live in as there is climate that is created where the general public feels safe and the criminals fear arrest as it would lead to their death. There is a strong message and clear message sent out to the violent criminals through death penalty and it helps in controlling the serious crimes (Cheng, 2019). Death penalty helps the US legal system to maximize justice The US legal system provides opportunities to the criminals to challenge the decisions of the court, thus developing the system of justice. With the help of modern technologies lie detectors and DNA tests help to prove the crime of the criminals. In the process the chances that the innocent would be punished would be decreased and the guilty would be provided with the death punishment, thus making the process of justice more effective (Cheng, 2019). Aileen Wuornos was accused by the court of Florida for murdering six men in the year 2002. She challenged the decision and demanded self-defense but was found guilty by the court and was killed with lethal injection. Conclusion Thus concluding, it can be stated that death penalty is a punishment that is legalized by the government of the United States in 31 states. It can be considered to an effective punishment as it deters the criminals from performing serious crimes. Fear is created amongst the criminals and it is seen that less number of murders are followed by a death penalty.
