ABSTRACT
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the idea of connecting everything around us. The Inte
rnet of
Things as an intelligent collaboration of miniaturized sensors poses new challenges to
security and end-user privacy. The ITU has identified that the protection of data and privacy
of users is one of the key challenges in the Internet of Things [Int05] because lack of
confidence about privacy will result in decreased adoption among users. This report gives an
introduction about (IoT), which offers a way to identify and connect worldwide physical
objects into a unified and secure system. This report also gives us an overview about
categorization, and analysis of security and privacy challenges in the field of (IoT).

1. INTRODUCTION
Building upon the concept of Device to Device (D2D) communication technology of Bill Joy
[1], Internet of Things (IoT) incorporate the concept of free flow of information between the
various embedded computing devices using the internet. The term “Internet of Things” was
first proposed by Kevin Ashton in the year 1982 [2]. IoT finds its application in almost every
field we can imagine in the modern life. As we know that every new facility comes with its
own problem set within it. IoT is not different from it. Everything which uses the internet
infrastructure for information exchange is susceptible to various security issues. IoT has also
some major privacy concerns for the end users. Even with all its advanced capabilities in the
information exchange area, IoT is an imperfect concept from the security point of view and
suitable steps has to be taken in the starting phase itself before going for further development
of IoT.
In this report, many security and privacy issues related to IoT are discussed by defining some
open challenges. Then, discussion on some applications of IoTs in real world is done in brief.
Rest of the report is organized as Section 2 gives an overview and real life application areas
of IoTs. Security and privacy concerns in IoTs are discussed in Section 3. Section 4
concludes report with references at the end.
2. Internet of Things and its applications
We can define Internet of Things (IoT) as collection of devices that may function as sensors
(like fire alarm), actuator (It is a component of a machine which is responsible for controlling
or the movement of a system or mechanism), controllers or activity recorders (like web cam).
These devices basically interact with software’s running somewhere else in the network, like
on a mobile phone, laptop, on an embedded computable machine on the public Internet (e.g.,
in “the cloud”), or on a mix combination of these. IoT devices basically made to function
autonomously and independently, without requiring human intervention and interaction.
The term “IoT” has potentially a very broad scope. IoT concept can be to deployed in homes,
businesses areas, manufacturing facilities, transportation industries, and elsewhere we can
think of. Thus, IoT is basically much bigger and broader concept, more than simply
consumer-oriented devices.
As shown in Figure 1, the IoT allow people and things to be connected and interact with each
other at anytime, anywhere, with anything and with anyone. Ideally using any path or
network or any service [3]. They are “Material objects connected to material objects in the
Internet”.

We can take an example of RFID (Radio-frequency identification). Through RFID, laser
scanners, global writing system, infrared based sensors and other information sensing devices
like pressure sensors, temperature sensors etc. are connected to any object for the purpose of
communication services and data exchange. Nowadays every human being has a mobile or
smartphone. Every smartphone has a range of sensors built-in like accelerometer, gyro
sensor, video, proximity sensor, compass, GPS, etc. and connectivity options like cell
network, WiFi, bluetooth, NFC, etc. So, we can say that we have a well-equipped IoT device
in our pocket that can automatically monitor our movements, location, and workouts
throughout the day. At last we can say that IoT is the most needed technological field to reach
