Become familiar with some of the screening tools used to assess growth and development. These are tools that can be simply administered without specialized knowledge or clinical experience. They are available through universities, colleges, intermediate school districts, hospitals, and clinics. The ESI (Early Screening Inventory) and DDST II (Denver Developmental Screening Test II) are two examples. Arrange to obtain one of these tools and use it to test three different children in the age range indicated. Obtain permission from the child’s parents prior to testing the child. Because you are probably not experienced in assessment at this point, do not share the results of the test with the child, the child’s parents, or other professionals. Remember to keep the results confidential.
