Because of religious beliefs, a terminally ill cancer patient wishes to refuse medical treatment and die a “natural” death. Can that person be required under state law to undergo treatment? What if the wish to die is not based on a religious belief, but the person is a minor or is mentally incompetent? What if the cancer was caused by exposure to radiation and the person wishes his or her death to be a political statement on the dangers of nuclear power and nuclear war?
