Project 2 Checklist The Project 1 CHECK List or Things to Make You Are Not Doing Before Turning in Project 2 1) Even when writing about articles written in the past, and authors who wrote them in the past, the text itself exists in the present. Please use Literary Present Tense when referring to your articles in your essays.  Example: Cathcart states, “If anything, the rise of the web seems worse, pointing not just to occasional outrageous ignorance but to the death of general knowledge itself” (par. 9).  Note: for future projects, not using the Literary Present Tense will count as a grammatical error. 2) Format titles accurately. See the textbook, esp. Chapter 17, and OWL weblink on WebCampus. Wrong formatting will continue to count as grammatical errors. 3) The title of your paper does not get formatted in any way. Only first letters of major words should be capitalized.  4) MLA formatting requires 1 inch Margins all around and only Left Justification of text. The right side of the page should be "jagged." 5) Use Block Quotation format for quotes that take up more than four lines of your text. 6) Watch out for easy grammar fixes as described in my feedback.  While we do not spend time exploring grammar, mechanics, and punctuation in this class, it is assumed you have basic proficiency, so please track down your challenges using OWL or other online grammar guides (Grammar Girl is a good one) to "backfill" where your skills in this may have atrophied over the years.  Please know that slippage of skills does happen, esp. when we haven't seen direct instruction in grammar since 7-8th grade, but college writing requires you to show near mastery in these skills if you want to impress future professors and be seen as a serious writer.  So let's review, and bolster those atrophied skills. 7) “The in-text citation goes at the end of the sentence,” and the period goes after the citation, no matter where in the sentence the quote actually ends, like this (DeVito 8). 8) As a thesis statement is required for the beginning of your essay, Topic Sentences are required in each subsequent paragraph of the essay, and these must be persuasive and connect with the idea of the thesis. 9) Use Transitions to help your reader move from paragraph to paragraph, sentence to sentence idea to idea.  But don't overuse them! 10) Return to your Thesis Idea in your Conclusion.  No need to write "In Conclusion," since most readers would see that it's your last paragraph.  Project 2: The Annotated Bibliography & Introduction (Final Draft) Writing Project 2: The Annotated Bibliography & Introduction For this assignment, you will write a critical annotated bibliography consisting of five academic-level sources and corresponding annotations. You will also write a two-page introduction in which you explain your search strategy and your plan for using your sources to write your researched argument essay. Please make sure your topic conforms to the course theme of Cyberculture and the Digital Age, as this is the research you are doing for your final paper that must use this course theme. Criteria: An annotated bibliography is a list of source citations, each followed by a brief annotation – a paragraph or two summarizing the content of the source. In addition, a critical annotation includes an assessment of the credibility of the material. The annotated bibliography is centered on a research question based on the topic you have chosen. The answer to this research question will evolve into your claim and will be the foundation of your researched argument essay. The number of sources required for this assignment is five. At least three of your sources must be scholarly. Other sources may be substantive news sources, government sources or additional scholarly sources. The length of each annotation will vary depending on the source itself, but each should consist of at least one substantial paragraph (about 100-200 words). Please also include at least one quotation from the source and cite in MLA format (quotation does not count toward minimum word length. Sources from popular magazines/web sites are not acceptable. Related Reading Assignments – See “Evaluating Sources” in Chapter 4 (51-59), " Annotated Bibliographies" in Chapter 9 (93-111) and "MLA Style" in Chapter 17 (193-252). The Introduction to Your Bibliography: When done correctly, the introduction helps writers discover what they know about their topic, what sources will help them produce the final paper, and what additional work needs to be done. This element of Writing Project #3 can also help writers determine what kind of argument will best serve their purpose. The introduction should include all from the following checklist: Provide research question Indicate the kind of paper you intend to write (e.g. position paper, proposal, refutation argument) Provide thesis/claim/position Discuss background information readers will need and which sources you will use to supply this information Identify which sources will be used to support the planned claim Identify other point(s) of view that you plan to address and which source(s) will be used for this purpose Discuss strategies in your effort to locate sources (e.g. where you looked, keywords used and the success you had) Discuss what additional material may be needed Discuss any problems with the sources listed in the annotated bibliography Discuss any concerns or difficulties anticipated in writing the essay
