Based on what we have discussed about the workings of the brain, consider the following science fi ction scenario: a mad scientist kidnaps you, and renders you unconscious. Then he takes your brain, and places it in a bowl that provides nutrients, and is connected to a computer to provide ‘sensations’. When you awake, would you be able to tell your brain was no longer in your body? Why or why not? if the computer were providing all your ‘sensations’, would it matter to you that your physical body had been discarded? What would be the disadvantages of being a ‘disconnected’ brain? can you think of any advantages?
