Bandura has explored the effects of the frequent exposure of children and adults to aggression and inhumane behavior in the media, and he has been concerned about the aggressive models that our culture provides. You can explore your own response by carefully monitoring your own television viewing and computer activity (i.e., playing computer games or surfing the Internet) and recording how many violent episodes you see in each show or activity. A “violent episode” is any behavior aimed at harming another living creature that wishes to avoid such treatment. Assaults on inanimate objects are considered violent if they indirectly cause harm, such as destruction of another’s property. After each viewing period, record your mood and desire to express yourself aggressively on a scale of 1 (not at all) to 10 (a great deal). Do you see any correlation between your intensity of mood and the number of violent episodes you observe? Do your results confirm Bandura’s position that exposure to aggression tends to increase aggression?
