Aventura meter in a horizontal pipeline carrying water contracts from a normal section of 8 in diameter to a throat section 3 in diameter as shown in Figure P5.55. A differential manometer containing mercury (S.G. = 13.6) attached to the meter gives a reading of 2.5 in and a piezometer tube attached to the upstream full section shows a water level of 5 ft above the pipeline. Neglecting losses in the meter, calculate the pipe discharge and the resultant hydrodynamic force on the meter (lb).
