Is Internet Censorship Constitutional? Jace White Cedar Hill Collegiate High School/Cedar Valley College ENGL 1302 English Composition John Stutler November 11th, 2020 Is Internet Censorship Constitutional? In recent years as the internet has evolved and changed over time, it has become a debate whether censoring the content consumers can view is a good idea or not. First of all, what do I mean by “Internet Censorship”? Internet Censorship is the control of information that can be viewed by the public on the Internet and that can be carried out by governments, institutions etc. (Poetker, 2019)1 In my own personal opinion, I believe that the censorship of online content is a generally bad idea that could eventually cascade into even greater issues as time goes on. The purpose of Internet Censorship, according to Bridget Poetker is to: stop people from accessing copyrighted information, keep people from viewing harmful or sensitive content, control internet-related crime, and monitor the billions of people on the internet every day. These are valid reasons for restricting content from viewers, however there are some who take censoring content to the extreme. An example of such a place is none other than modern-day China, the government constantly restricts the content that their citizens can view. This is all in an attempt to reduce the chance of dissent within the population and keep them ignorant of how bad their situation really is. (Hartman, 2019)3 There are a multitude of arguments for and against the censorship of online content, the most extreme of which I have lightly touched on already. While there was a focus on being culturally or religiously superior, the term "race" did not really exist until recent years. It has been widely accepted that the term race originated in Europe during the early modern period, and then spread to the rest of the world during the Age of Imperialism. Although different areas of the world have their own concepts of race, the concept of race seems to have a discrete form in the United States. For many it is no longer the usage of identity, but an intolerable excuse for racism. For others, race is used in order to connect with cultural ties, simply used for identification purposes. In order to establish a common ground to underlie when race should be used and for what purpose, the origin and the historical change of the term race needs to be evaluated. By doing so one is able to see why race is an ongoing social issue in the United States. For many the question lies on why race is an issue here in the United States. In the United States one no longer knows when or how to use race. When going outside and asking others what is race, an absurd amount of people will often say that race is associated with biological concepts. Unfortunately this is the same group of people who often use racial factors to discriminate against others. In chapter 8 of the book “America Becoming: Racial Trends and Their Consequences:Volume I” Micharl A.Omi proclaims that biologist , geneticist, and anthropologist long ago reached to the conclusion that race is not a scientific concept, nevertheless race is commonly defined in terms of biological traits. Meaning it is associated with physical traits such as skin, hair texture, and other physical attributes. When the concept of race was first popularized in the United States, many believed race it was forged due to slavery. Richard B. Moore wrote a book titled “The Name Negro: Its Origin and Evil Use”, where he affirms that race was developed from slave ownders in traders, in the mediterranian, as a why to descrive thier captives. He later continues to state that race then moved over to America during slavery in the United States. He also claims that before race people were generally grouped according to their culture. Even Though it is not a person’s fault, many are still raised with the ideology that a white complex is a pure person. This is how it was during the 19th century, and to this day it is still a common idea. With this idea being tossed around, the concept of race starts to change. We now have derogatory terms that are associated with race, being formed in the South. On the other hand, we have situations where race can provide beneficial aspects. Going back to the book “America Becoming: Racial Trends and Their Consequences:Volume I”, Mr.Omi is able to provide situations where using race as a form of identification can be useful. Whenever one is to fill out government documents, it can help determine where government assistance goes into. Not only this, but the usage of race allows us to connect with one another, through our common identities. Youth in the modern day like to use race as a form of friendliness with a friend group. They would often remark something along the lines of “there my race”, even though not meant literally. It is another form of saying that they all binded in some form. Even in social media one can often see how race is used in a positive manner. Often on various platforms, we can use hashtags that would often say “Black Culture” or “Asian Culture”, although they can be too generalized, they often provide a boundless opportunity for many people to connect with their race and see what others have in common. *To be honest, I still need to further develop my ideas for this section* Overall, we can see in both situations how race is being used accordingly and inappropriate ways in the United States. For the justification of discrimination and white supremacy. While others simply use race as a form of identification in relation to cultural ties. In short there is no clear path to solve the problem that race can cause, but what we do know is that race will be continued to be used as a form of identification from various viewpoints, whether it be virtue or abominable reasons.
