1. Select one painting and onesculpture created by Michelangelo. Discuss the significance and the history behind the creations. Include a short 2 paragraph biography.
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on 6 March 1475 in Caprese close to Arrezo, Italy. He was also a painter, builder, author, sculptor and technician, a master of all businesses. It remains the 16th century's most renowned High Renaissance individual. Michelangelo was one of the high-renaissance Italian artists most influenced in literature. He has played an enormous role in Western art until today as sculptor, architect, painter, and poet. He not only gave us new thoughts on art, he revolutionized it in its entirety. No other artist had the confidence to enter such an environment before he accepted his nudity in artwork.
The Pieta, David, Virgin and Child and the tomb are some of his most well-known works in sculpture. The Sixtine Chapel and the Last Judgment are the works which stand out most. In architecture, such as Plan of Façade, Laurentian Library and St Peters 'Basilique, Michelangelo also made a significant contribution. The key theme of Michelangelo is mankind in its natural state in his paintings and sculptures. He devoted Michelangelo's principal work to sculpture. Since both negative and positive aspects were seen in his art, he can be seen as having an extremely stable character.
The Sixtin chapel is one of the world's best-known interior painted rooms, and almost all this fame comes from the beautiful 1508-1512 ceiling decoration. The four-year work includes several nude figures and various biblical tales that are completely incredible to see. Painted in bright colors, they bring different emotions and moods to the audience especially if you are aware of the stories from the Bible. The use of the nude image led to a controversy and was accused of being unethical, but the Pope defended him. Some of the original stories he was to depict in the Sistine chapel include the ancestors of Jesus, the prophets, and the 12 apostles.
Another beautiful piece of art was David's statue from David the King from the Bible. This piece, which for the last 40 years has not been finished, has been assigned to Michelangelo. It was to be a sign of independence for the Florentine people. The statue of David has been sculpted from a marble block, and given its enormous height, you start to understand Michelangelo's ability to work over five meters. The completion of the statue had several problems, but Michelangelo eventually brought it to fruition all in all. David's statue can be seen as a show of energy. Perhaps Michelangelo was more confident with portraying nude figures, again he scored by displaying the best form. David's statue has vivid, fiery eyes, which reflect his bravery as he did when Goliath was murdered.
2. Describe what is meant by "humanism" and why it is particularly important to the cultural and intellectual movement of the Renaissance.
Humanism emerges from a metaphysical meditation, primarily followed by western thinkers, while other thinkers came also from the West. The nature of the human being in the world was the fundamental crux of their thinking. These ideas have therefore been proposed on the primary end of human life as work for the welfare of people on earth. They have propounded a thought that the abundant material, spiritual and cultural things derived from the natural world are valued, created and used by human beings. (Gersh and Roest, 2003)
The extent of the implications of this gesture is indescribable but friendly and sensitive to the general. This human-centered life philosophy is known as humanism. Humanism, therefore, as a philosophy, emanates from the ongoing need for human beings to dramatically change their lives, 'integrate their personalities into simple, coherent and persuasive views of life and to search for specific and credible ways of resolving their problems. (Kraye, 2014)
The humanist Renaissance movement was born in Italy. The humanism spread to Britain in the first half of the 15th century through Church and literary connections with Italy. Jacob Burckhardt described the renaissance of humaism as a human viewpoint that concentrates on human action and not a religious scheme blindly. Humanists believed that God had given mankind opportunities and opportunity, and humanists needed to take steps to optimize it. Humanism sought to use intelligence, love and maybe even fascination with the past in order to alter how they and others saw and felt about their own time. It was not a pastiche, but a fresh understanding that provided the historical alternative for "medieval" ways of thinking with a modern viewpoint. Humanism began to shape culture and society and was primarily motivated by what we now call the Renaissance. Therefore, humanism became the core theme of the Renaissance. Scholars focused their attention towards the real being who was to be fulfilled rather than focusing more time on the Church's ideal facts. Also if God is kept in the picture, people are confused about their religion and try, with logical theories like Copernicus revolution, to replace the ludicrous Church lesson.
3. Compare and contrast the lives of lords and serfs in medieval times. List at least three points of similarity and three of contrast and discuss each.
Serfs were a kind of worker, the lowest of the peasant class. The servants who resided on their lands were owned by Lords. In exchange for a place to live, the servants worked for themselves and their lord in the land to raise their own crops. Therefore, serfs should be working in the farms and pay rent for the lord. Serfs,...
