Good vocabulary and proper grammar is compulsory Overview Technology Based Firms (TBFs) play a significant role in economic development and have been regarded as an engine of growth. Commercialization of TBF gingers rapid industrialization, employment generation, wealth creation and generates revenue. Malaysia, being an emerging economy, realizes this fact and has actively introduced several policy measures in facilitating commercialization of TBFs. Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change introduced Science, Technology and Innovation policy and Intellectual Property Commercialization policy for Research and Development projects funded by government of Malaysia, to encourage the innovation and commercialization culture in the country. According to these policies, several grants and funds are given at different stages of the product cycle, to facilitate commercialization for TBFs. Despite several policy and fund interventions by the government, national progress in intellectual property and rate of commercialization in Malaysia remains low. Malaysia currently aims to achieve 15 percent of commercialization by 2020, yet during 9th and 10th Malaysian plan only 8.3% of national research and innovation products were commercialized. The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of government in commercialization and to identify other barriers and challenges faced by the technology based start-ups in Malaysia which results the start-ups to fall in the valley of death. This study adopts a qualitative research approach and uses secondary data and interviews as the main data collection technique. For the purpose of the study interviews were conducted from the experienced MTDC’s personnel and Commercialization of Research and Development Fund (CRDF) recipients. The interviews were then coded and analyzed by using content analysis technique. The outcome of the study helped the researcher in understanding the current commercialization ecosystem in Malaysia. This study helps to identify the existing gaps which result in unsuccessful commercialization of technology based start-ups. A collaborative model is devised which depicts how an intermediary can play a crucial role in escaping the valley of death in Malaysia. Moreover practical solutions and recommendations are provided on the basis of the findings.
