At this point, you should be using the activities we did these last 2 weeks (Q-H-Q, Academic Intro, Toulmin Method as Outline to help your structure, elaborate/ cut out/ move around and begin shaping and creating Draft 2 of the Research Essay. Draft 2 should look different than Draft 1 which was the Q-H-Q in that it begins to have a structure resembling an essay. Consider approaching Draft 2 of the Alternative Perspective the following way:
1) Create a Structure to write "into" by using theToulmin Method(Links to an external site.)to outline.
2) On a blank document cut and paste your Academic Intro
3) Begin experimenting with breaking up major ideas/questions you liked from the Q-H-Q into pieces, keeping or discarding, moving around pieces that work or do not work. If there are gaps, consider what kinds of paragraphs/elaborations would need to come between. Or decide if that is something you need to save for the next essay. The Toulmin Method concepts of "Warrant" and "Backing" should help you see where those gaps might be. Students will not be graded on how well they transition. I'm more interested in your development of ideas and how well you engaged the annotated sources you will be citing.
4) Begin integrating your Signal Phrases and Quotation Templates where ever there is evidence and places where evidence needs to be "Warranted" or analyzed more for its implications on your working thesis.
5) Include a Works Cited or References page that corresponds to the in text citations you have. Keep these sources annotated. Note, this doesn't count towards you total page count of 2.5-3page singles spaced writing.
Length and spacing:Your Draft 2 should be approx. 2.5-3 pages single spaced, no less to get the most out of the Peer Review.PLEASE DO NOT double space your work yet. We do not do this until the final research portfolio at the end of the quarter. I'll ask you to resubmit if you do
