At the founding of the United Nations in 1945, there were 51 nation-states. In 1979, there were 188, most of them former colonies—all with aspirations of improving the quality of life for their citizens. This changing context, especially the emergence of the Non-Aligned Movement in 1961, along with demands for a new world economic order (NWEO) and a new world information order (NWIO) during the 1980s, has influenced the contemporary practice of communication for development.
