Introduction
Healthcare is a dynamic and there may be enormous organisations supporting and funding this sector. Moreover, it is one of the largest sector that may lie under hospitality and as a result it provides employment to a number of individuals. In order to study and learn more about the management and functioning of healthcare organisations ‘Javon Bea’ president of Mercy health organisation was contacted for an interview. Mercy health a non-profit healthcare provider and hospital system and ‘Crusader Community Health’ is the branch of this organisation present in Rockford, Illinois. This interview focused upon internal functioning and management of this hospital through certain questions and the discussion is presented below.
1. What are the issues associated with inter-departmental interaction at the hospital?
The hospital in concern is reported to be the best in area in order to provide highest level of medical attention and care to the mothers and their newly born babies. Baves however, commented on this question and reflected that Mercy health is a non-profit organisation and Crusader Community Health is the hospital in partnership with them at Rockford, Illinois. Therefore, both horizontal as well as vertical communication flow exists in order to provide best possible care to the patients. The leader further, emphasised upon vertical communication in the organisation and reflected that both upwards as well as downward communication exist in the organisation and both are maintained with equal care. Special emphasis is given to the employees when they reach to higher department with their suggestions or feedbacks. Likewise, downward communication delivers essential communication to the employees and helps them to stay updated with respect to any organisational change, strategies, and new goals (Britt, Moore, Shuck, Benson & Osam, 2016).
Beave also mentioned that horizontal communication is an essential aspect that supports the functioning at the hospital and helps the doctors as well as staff members to coordinate activities. Leader reflected that microphones have been installed in the hospital in order to maintain horizontal communication at the hospital while, complains or suggestion can be registered at the website.
2. How do you promote interdepartmental communication?
In order for an organisation to function and sustain, interdepartmental communication is an essential tool (Tignanelli, Embree & Barzin, 2017). Beave commented on this question with a very detailed perspective and crux of the same will be discussed here. The leader suggested that communication channels are open at horizontal as well as vertical levels in order to promote interdepartmental communication. At the hospital, doctors and staff members coordinate activities through horizontal transfer. While, the head of hospital is the channel to the vertical communication and is subjected to report to Mercy Health’s management team with respect to any issue or feedback. Further, Beave also emphasized upon the fact that, if the staff members or doctors at lower level feels their concerns are not being transferred to the management through vertical flow, they can directly contact the Mercy Health’s management.
3. What are your views regarding the ethical issues?
Beave sincerely replied to this question with the fact that ‘healthcare and ethics does not go hand in hand’. Further, he explained his statement and reflected that ethical...
