At a staff meeting with the Vice President of Student Affairs at a medium-sized state university, several department heads indicate that the students with whom they work need help in developing leadership skills. The Sorority and Fraternity Advisor says that officers of the organizations often make errors of judgment that lead to problems for Greek organizations. The Student Government Advisor says that most elected officers do not know how to delegate tasks to others and then monitor their work. The Residence Hall Director says that resident advisors and hall advisors have difficulty understanding their responsibilities and duties and often do not consult with others when they should.

You are the Dean of Students and the Vice President asks you to develop a comprehensive leadership training program that will address the concerns that have been raised in these campus student affairs units. How would you go about determining what type of leadership development is needed and then organizing a leadership development program for students?



Make a list of all the offices on your campus that have physical space or a staff member devoted to serving a specific subgroup of students. How many are there? Enough or too many? Can you think of other offices that should be established on your campus?
