Assume a person has a completely lacerated flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon of the ring finger at the level of the A4 pulley. Furthermore, the person reports that attempts at making a fist result in extension rather than flexion of the distal interphalangeal joint of the ring finger. (This observation is often referred to by clinicians as “paradoxic extension.”) Please offer a possible kinesiologic explanation for this phenomenon.
