I. Introduction
Money and happiness are two concepts that are often discussed together. While some people believe that money can buy happiness, others argue that it can't. In his TEDx talk, Daniel Sachau argues that money can't buy happiness. However, I would argue that money can indeed make us happy, but it depends on how we use it. In this paper, I will explore the relationship between money and happiness and argue that when it improves the quality of life, money can make us happy. Sachau argues that money can't buy happiness because happiness is a state of mind that is not necessarily linked to material possessions. He points out that the things that bring us the most joy in life, such as spending time with loved ones, experiencing new things, and pursuing our passions, don't require money. While Sachau is correct that happiness is not solely dependent on material possessions, it is unfair to suggest that money doesn't play a role at all.
II. Literature Review
The relationship between money and happiness has been the subject of extensive research in psychology and economics. While some studies have found a positive correlation between income and happiness, others have found little or no relationship. One of the earliest and most influential studies on this topic was conducted by Easterlin (1974), who proposed the Easterlin Paradox. This paradox suggests that while increases in income may lead to temporary increases in happiness, they do not lead to sustained increases in well-being over time. Easterlin argued that this is due to the relative nature of happiness - people's happiness is largely determined by their level of income relative to others around them.
However, subsequent research has challenged the Easterlin Paradox and found evidence of a positive correlation between income and happiness. For example, a meta-analysis by Diener and Biswas-Diener (2002) found that income is positively correlated with happiness, although the relationship is weaker among those with higher incomes. Other research has focused on the specific ways in which money can contribute to happiness. For example, financial security has been identified as an important predictor of happiness (Diener & Biswas-Diener, 2002). When people feel secure in their financial situation and have the resources to meet their basic needs and pursue their goals, they are more likely to experience happiness and well-being.
