Once you have developed your product/service, you then need to determine how to make it available to the end user. Using your textbook and the articles from the Databases, develop a distribution system for the product/service you chose in Unit 1.
The product chosen in unit 1 is the SMART PHONES

• Discuss how many channel members you will use and explain why (intensive distribution, exclusive distribution or selective distribution)
• Recommend a channel organization and explain why (conventional, vertical, horizontal or multichannel marketing system)
Your report MUST include a reference list. All research should be cited in the body of the paper. In-text citations and corresponding references should be included in your paper. For more information on APA, please visit the APA Lab. The paper should be written in third person; this means pronouns like “I”, “we”, and “you” are not appropriate. The use of direct quotes is strongly discouraged.
Your assignment should contain a cover page, an abstract page and a reference page in addition to the body. The body of the paper should be 2-3 pages in length - starting with a brief one paragraph introduction and ending with a short conclusion. The entire submission will be 5-6 pages in length.

Introduction:
A channel facilitates the transfer of ownership and physical exchange of the product –
smart phones. Channel level refers to the number of lev
els of intermediary between the
manufacturer and the end user (Kotler, 2000).
Channel Levels:
In the Smartphone industry both direct and indirect channels of distribution prevails,
though the majority is indirect channels. There are mobile phone shops, lifestyle products shops
and websites that sell Smartphones. These indirect distribution channels. Also there are exclusive
showrooms of the mobile phone companies like Nokia Priority outlets, Samsung Smartphone
shops, Sony showrooms through which the companies sell their products. Some of the
Smartphone manufacturers like Apple sells the Smartphones directly from their website – a
direct channel of distribution whereas others like Nokia sells through partner websites, for
example, in India Nokia’s website directs the customers to http://nokia.indiatimes.com when he
clicks on buy option for a product - an indirect channel of distribution.
Channel Organizations:
Both vertical and horizontal channels are present in the Smartphone industry. The
manufacturers supply their products to the retailers like mobile phone shops, supermarkets where
the shop owner displays the Smart phones and sells them. Also the manufacturers supply their
products to a large number of retailers and shops. Proper management of the channels is
important to avoid channel conflicts.
Smartphone companies often implement multi-channel marketing strategies to ensure the
company’s products are conveyed to the target customer segment at different times in different

ways. The concept of multichannel strategy is that it gives an option to effectively use of
different media helps a brand to gain top-of-mind recall when the buyer is making a purchasing
decision (Kotler, 2000).
