Assignment Table: Part 1: Data Collection
    Identity of food item 1:
    1. Where was the food item produced?
Potatoes are a cool season vegetable, which require a mild, frost-free growing season with regula
r rainfall or irrigation. They are grown in the coastal, tablelands and Riverina districts of NSW. The coastal potato growing districts are located between the Great Dividing Range and the Tasman Sea.
Robertson is currently recognized for its potato farming and is the birthplace of the "Big Potato." A local potato producer erected the Big Potato in the 1970s. Robertson was also the setting for the 1995 picture Babe.
As stated by Whelan and Mulcahy (2017), potatoes are Australia's most popular vegetable, with an average yearly intake of 68 kilograms per person (ABS, 1998). About 35% of the potato production in NSW is sold fresh, 59 percent is processed and 6% is utilized as seed.
    2. Approximately, how far would the food item have to travel to get to your city/town?
As stated by Borus, Parsons, Boersma, Brown and Mohammed (2018), fresh potatoes are mostly delivered through retail locations, with supermarkets accounting for the vast majority (72 percent). In the washed potato sector, supermarket dominance has resulted in huge industry consolidation and fewer and larger extremely vertically integrated potato enterprises. Potato has several environmental implications or challenges that are associated with it, notably during its cultivation, aside from its contribution to food security and economic gains. The issue involves the release of greenhouse gases as well as the leaching of old fertilizers.
    3. Would this be considered a local food based on the reading (Local foods are ones that are sourced from within 100 miles)?
No, this has not to be considered as a local food crop as per the above readings. In Australia, it is outside the 100 miles. Over the last ten years, there has been a...
