Spring 2020 - INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT Module Code: CIVL 0010.1 Module Name: Materials 2 Level: 2 Max. Marks: 100 Materials 2 (CIVL 0010.1) – Spring – 2020 – Assignment 2(CW project) – Session A&B– QP MEC_AMO_TEM_034_01 Page 2 of 11 Assignment Task (100 Mark) General suggestions The following general ideas of project selection are suggested to help (Guide) the student to select the topic (topic is must be more specific): (student is encouraged to focus on the sustainability in the selected project). Perform an online review/literature review on one of ideas shown in below: 1. Use of different advanced construction materials in building construction (calculate, analyze and discuss in detail about any innovative material used in construction (to be used in Oman) including its Engineering properties specifically durability based on experimental data available in literature and discuss their suitability of use) 1. Special study of wood as construction material (or) 2. Low cost materials in concrete construction (or) 3. Study the sustainability in construction by using waste materials (or) 4. Bituminous materials as civil engineering construction material (or) 5. Study on one of innovative metals used in construction (or). 6. Study on Masonry materials used in construction. OR 2. Investigate the performance of different traditional construction materials in Oman and problem statement through engineering properties calculations specifically durability (physical, chemical and Mechanical properties) of materials based on experimental data available in literature and discuss their suitability of use. 1. study of wood as construction material (or) 2. materials in concrete construction (or) 3. Bituminous materials as civil engineering construction material (or) 4. Study on metals used in construction (or). 5. Study on Masonry materials used in construction. A literature report should be dealing with the results from primary literatures to produce a coherent argument about a topic or focused description of a field. Materials 2 (CIVL 0010.1) – Spring – 2020 – Assignment 2(CW project) – Session A&B– QP MEC_AMO_TEM_034_01 Page 3 of 11 Note The student has to take consent of teacher on the selected topic. Selected construction materials should be compared with other construction materials (at least two) Please keep in mind following facts while writing your report: The report is often used to present, analyze and summarize data. You will find in the following some basic instructions on how to prepare the coursework report. Sections of the Report The Report should contain the following sections: Abstract Introduction Methodology Result analysis Discussion of results Conclusions References 1. Abstract (maximum 1/2 page) The abstract must be brief, but it has to tell the reader Significance of the project (research problem). What is/are objective/s of the work (e.g. study the influence of w/c ratio on the workability of concrete) etc. Which type of work has been carried out? What are the results obtained (findings) (e.g. increasing the w/c ratio increase the slump of the mix by 5%), preferably not more than 2 sentences. Main conclusions (e.g. increasing w/c improve workability of concrete.) 2. Introduction (maximum 2 page) Depending on the project selected give brief history and theory on that topic. Discuss general material classification, factors affecting the selection process. Literature studies. How the work has been done. Objectives should be mentioned clearly. 3. Methodology (maximum 3 page) Discuss the properties of the selected material (e.g. for concrete material) shown in literatures. Explain how the material will effect in terms of performance. Materials 2 (CIVL 0010.1) – Spring – 2020 – Assignment 2(CW project) – Session A&B– QP MEC_AMO_TEM_034_01 Page 4 of 11 What are the procedures to perform any test and aim of this test mentioned in literature? Calculations of engineering properties Procedures for mix design if any. Applications of the materials Plan for implementing this project report. 4. Results analysis (maximum 2 page) The results can be obtained from literatures and analysis (using graphs), so that the student can take these results from literatures and put them in figures to be analyzed and discussed with mentioning citation of these results. 5. Result Discussion (maximum 2 pages) Discuss the results/ data in detail with giving your justification about the behavior of materials and they should be supported by previous studies. 6. Conclusions (maximum 1 page) State briefly what are the major judgment or decision reached by you based on findings? No references should be there. 7. References Use CU Harvard referencing system as per our college rules. (At least 10 references) 8. Appendix Any additional figures, tables, and photos should be included here. Rules & Regulations: All resources should be cited using CU Harvard style. The final assignment must have a Title page, Table of Contents, References/ bibliography using CU Harvard Style and page numbers. Title Page must have Assignment Name, Module name, Session, your name, ID, and the name of the faculty. Softcopy in word format is to be submitted through Turnitin link on Moodle. Guidelines: Assignment must be computer typed. Font - Times New Roman Font – Style - Regular Font - Size - 12 Heading should be with Font Size 14, Bold, Capital and Underline. Materials 2 (CIVL 0010.1) – Spring – 2020 – Assignment 2(CW project) – Session A&B– QP MEC_AMO_TEM_034_01 Page 5 of 11 Follow specified spacing. Generally use 1.5 x line spacing unless advised. Explain with suitable diagrams wherever required. Diagrams must be drawn using suitable software or by pencil. Each student has to do the assignment individually You can refer books in eLibrary or use internet resource. But you should not cut and paste material from internet nor provide photocopied material from books. The assignment answers should be in your own words after understanding the matter from the above resources. Data taken from literatures must be compared, figured and cited and analyzed. The size limit: Normally, contain your report in 4-10 pages of written text plus additional pages for Figures (index). Follow specified spacing. Generally use 1.5 x line spacing unless advised. Include your own field sketches or photographs. It is generally better to position figures within the text rather than group them at the end of the report. Give a sequential number to all figures (Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 3, etc.) Add a brief, informative caption to the figures and should be below the figure and title of tables should be above the table.
