Assignment

Sun Wukong (SW) is a new taxi-style service that delivers customers to and from Melbourne Airport. Rather than working on pre-fixed rates based on distance and time, SW sets fees based on the demand. The system will then broadcast to the drivers who will then bid for the service within 5 minutes. A comprehensive set of tools such as distance, route, estimated time, toll costs, etc. will be provided on the app to both parties. An estimated cost will also be provided. The customer will see in real time the responses by the drivers. And once selected, the cost is locked in. Payment will only be released to the driver-provider at the end of the journey as determined by Global Positioning System (GPS) location. The entire journey will be tracked.

To achieve this goal, it has embarked on the following:

1) SW requires all drivers to be accredited, pass a criminal check and a test on familiarity with the apps required to do the job.

2) The system will allow both customer and driver to rate each other and provide comments. A star-rating system will appear for both customer and driver next to their online verified IDs.

3) Customers who are not using SW’s mob booking App or tourists may use a web site to make bookings. Those without credit/debit cards may be able to purchase gift cards from Eleven-Seven stores.

Question 1: Technology Requirements
Business Case
SW or Sun Wukong offers taxi-style service to the customers who are going to or coming from the Melbourne Airport. They don’t work on the traditional pre-fixed rates on the basis
of distance and time. Instead, they use various other metrics like routes, toll costs etc. to calculate and estimated fare dynamically in real time. Then they give the estimate to the customer and to the available and interested drivers. Drivers then respond to the customer giving their best quotes on the basis of the estimated value. Customers select a quote from that and then the journey starts. SW tracks the whole journey using GPS location services and the journey is marked finished based on the GPS data rather than the actions of the driver and/or the customer.
Project Definition
The project is aimed at developing an application that will be able to offer the bidding based taxi-style services to the customers travelling to and from the Melbourne Airport. The application will be available online. Drivers and customers can collaborate in real-time. It will help the drivers and customers to negotiate a deal in a more organized and hassle-free way. It will save the time and energy of both of the collaborators.
Business Objective
The primary objective of the business is to maximize the benefits and gains for the customers as well as the drivers in the minimal possible time.
Scope
The scope of the system is limited within the booking application and for the Melbourne Airport only. Other than the taxi-like services it does not offer such booking for any other transport. The GPS system is one of the main component of the proposed application. Other than that it needs to have registered drivers or providers and customers. There will be online payment option but the implementation of the same is out of the scope initially.
Benefits and Limitations
The benefits of the proposed information system are listed below,
· It will help to find a suitable deal on taxi booking in real-time without approaching to the taxi stand or individual taxi service provider. Rather, a customer can define his/her requirements once and the system will reach out to the taxi service providers to find a suitable deal for the requirements.
· On the other hand, the drivers also get clear information about the requirements of a customer and based on that they can provide quotes.
· The system calculates an estimate based on information like distance, destinations, time, route, toll taxes required for a route and so on. Then it gives the estimation to the customer. The customer can match the estimation with the quotes offered by the drivers and taxi service providers (Feiler, 2011). So, both of the parties can compare the estimation with the deals and that will help to find out the most suitable one.
· The customers will be able to make payment online for a booking.
· The GPS navigation system is there to track the movement of the vehicle carrying the customer.
· The system will drop a customer at a given location based on the GPS signals. Neither the driver nor the customer will be able to stop without reaching to the predefined destination. It will help to keep the process transparent and secure for both of the parties.
· An entire journey will be tracked and all details will be kept within the system.
· Drivers and customers can communicate before finalizing a deal. Such a communication is optional but may be required for clarification and transparency.
There are also some limitations of the system. The limitations are listed below.
· It is not possible to change the route or destination once a deal is locked.
· It is available for taxi-like service to and from the Melbourne airport only.
· There is no scope of using the...
