Non – Verbal Communication
Non-verbal communication is a process of communicating with each other but without using any written or spoken words. (Richard Nordquist, 2019) This is als
o known as manual language. This language was introduced in 1956 by Jurgen Ruesch who a psychiatrist was. It has been recognised as an important aspect of communication. Non-verbal communication includes the tone, pitch of voices and facial expressions. It consists of gestures (kinesics) and the physical distance between two people (proxemics). It helps to add more clues and additional information along with the spoken words. We may not realize whether we are using it or not.
Types of Non-verbal Communication
Body Movements- It includes facial expressions and eye contact. It also includes hand gestures, nodding or head shaking which are very easy elements of non-verbal communication.
Posture - The way we sit or stand, whether our arms are crossed or not it all comes under non-verbal communication. We communicate many gestures when we stand, sit or walk. Standing erect with a slight forward bend will allow the user to know that you are friendly in nature and available for them. When we talk with someone by facing in opposite direction it indicates avoiding.
Eye Contact- The amount of eye contact with any person determines the level of trust. It is important in interpersonal communication. It gives signal to the other person that you are interested in talking with them. If a speaker maintains eye contact with the audience it helps him to build a relationship with them.
Para-language- It is voice apart from the speech which includes pitch, tone and the speed at which we speak.
Personal Space- It determines the level of intimacy and it varies from culture to culture. People gets to know the importance and authority by using the personal rooms.
Facial Expressions- It includes smiling, blinking, fear etc. The very common statement is that face is the index of the mind. It helps to express the emotions or feelings like joy, love, sorrow, surprise, confusion and...
