These are detailed below:
Part One: This contains a Portfolio with 4 sections demonstrating your ability to create various
documents of communication, with all topics in each section related to healthcare.
Ideally the topics and methods you choose to use while devising your Portfolio should be
relevant to your chosen field of study and can be used to answer each question in the
assignment brief. Your work should show evidence of relevant reading around each topic.
Your work must be clearly referenced and include a bibliography.
Part Two: This contains 2 sections which require you to complete an Oral Presentation and
develop a Poster using the instructions in this assignment brief for guidance. You will be
marked on your understanding of each task and your delivery of the requirements in each
section outlined in the assignment brief.

Suggested topics include: “Communication strategies used in healthcare in relation to a specific illness/condition” “New communication technologies: How have these influenced communications in Healthcare?” Note: it can be on any Healthcare topic above are just suggestions. You should follow the guidelines below: The assignment must be presented formally, word processed, spelling and grammar checked and content structured appropriately. Format: Introduction 1) Introduction & Definition of topic – illness/condition/technology etc., (3 Marks) Body 2) Discuss communication methods generally e.g., - (4 Marks) Verbal....tone, pitch etc., non-verbal....gestures, facial expression etc. 3) Describe how the illness/condition/technology impacts on Communication in Healthcare generally, include statistics (4 Marks) 4) Describe how the illness/condition/technology affects the individual’s ability to communicate-(6 Marks) Negatively - Inability to communicate, speak....Inability to use gestures....etc., Positively - E.g. technology assists with ability to communicate 5) Discuss the HCA’s role in facilitating communication, consider the various difficulties: (4 Marks) e.g. Anomia, Aphasia, Dementia, Sight/hearing Impairment, use of technology etc., Consider the Environmental and Social Aspect when choosing communication methods and activities. 6) Discuss 2 recommendations to improve communication within your workplace (4 Marks) Conclusion including “your” learning while carrying out this report 7) From your experience, research discuss the impact on patient care when HCA’s have a solid understanding of communication within the healthcare sector. (2 Marks) 8) Marks will also be allocated for the following - Demonstrate evidence of critical thinking, additional research and correct referencing (2 Marks) - Formatting of project and overall layout (1 Marks) 6 Communications 5N0690 Part 1 - Portfolio Learner Brief b) Memorandum OR Agenda 10% b) (10 marks) You are required to prepare a either a Memorandum or Agenda (See below) The Memorandum should inform staff of the next healthcare meeting and purpose of meeting. Writing a Memo 1. Establish the purpose of your memo: Identify the main purpose of the memo. In other words, what’s your reason for writing it? This will be your subject and opening sentence. 2. Decide the audience for your memo: Ask yourself, do you really need to send it to all the employees in a particular department, or just HCA’s? Generally it should start like this: To: (the people you’re sending it to) From: (your name and job title) Subject: (the reason you’re writing the memo) Date: (including day, month and year) . Do’s and Don’ts of Memo Writing Don’t use informal/emotional language: Keep it strictly formal. No slang words or colloquial language. Even if you’re writing about inadequate performances, don’t berate or use sharp words. Be detached but polite in your criticism. Do use bullet points: If you have several issues to cover in the body, break it up using bullet points. This will keep your memo easy to read and understand quickly. Do be succinct: Don’t include unnecessary details. Ask yourself, “Can I write this sentence in a more clear or direct way?” Finish your memo by writing the conclusion. The conclusion should be about one or two sentences long, for example: I look forward to your support in this matter. I am excited to discuss opinions for training in the next meeting. OR You are required to write an Agenda for a Healthcare Staff Meeting. The meeting should be in relation to communications related legislation (ie: Social Media policy) and any other healthcare related topics of your choice.
