Introduction
Disaster management is a critical role to be played in the community, where a disaster has already caused significant harm to the residing population. This essay ventures into identifying the psychological impacts that disaster lay upon the people of a place, where a disaster had occurred and the special assessment needs of a high-risk population, after the disaster.
Psychological Impact of Disasters
Disasters harm not only the place, where it occurs, but also the population residing there. As mentioned by Bromet et al. (2017), apart from physical and financial harms, disasters tend to leave a long-term impact on their psychological constructs as well as mental well-being in the forms of shock, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), insomnia or hallucinations.
Caring for the Patient’s Psychological Needs as a Primary Care Provider
As a primary care provider, I would base my care plan on evidence-based practices, instead of my assumptions and common sense. As mentioned by Coutinho and Figueira (2013), one of the best ways to care for the psychological effects on the disaster victims is opting them for psychological debriefing. With the help of this method, the victims are able to express their emotions, trauma and experiences during the disaster, which helps them overcome the stress as well as live a normal life.
Anticipated Needs
When an individual suffers in the disaster, they are in the most need of being supported from all aspects. Therefore, apart from receiving medical help for tending to their physical injuries, they also need to be supported with mental counselling and psychological healing. As supported by Coutinho and Figueira (2013), disaster victims need to overcome their stressed and traumatic conditions, which is why repetitive counselling sessions and empathy are mostly needed by them. Besides, due to facing loss of property in the disaster, financial support can add to their coping strategy.
