Chapter 17
The negligence of the nurse in the context of unlocking the bathroom door and Judy showering by herself
The nursing staff in a healthcare organization is endowed with the duty to constantly check the movements of the psychiatric patients and keep them under supervision. In the case study mentioning the deteriorating mental condition of Judy accompanied by her suicidal tendency, the nurse has been negligent in three aspects. Firstly, the nurse, despite knowing the mental health condition of Judy without sufficient supervision unlocked the door. Rabelo-Silva et al. (2017) have stated that nurses must keep the patients suffering from suicidal tendency under constant supervision. In contrary to that, the second error committed by the nurse is not being present at the very moment when the psychiatrist came to meet Judy. Thirdly, the nurse has been incautious enough to consider that Judy, who has suicidal ideation, such as the normal people can bath without supervision.
The lowering of the standard of care by the nurse to keep the bathroom door while the unlocked while the psychiatrist’s visit
Maxwell (2018) has mentioned that the safety of the patients is the most significant responsibility of the nurses. In case of accident caused to patients by negligence of the nursing staff, the hospital procedures and policies have a greater role to play. Boyd et al. (2017) mentioned that hospital, in case of accidents and injury to the patients, takes all the necessary measures to not just compensate for the accident and provide the necessary treatment to the ailing patients, it also takes stringent steps against the nursing staff. Likewise, in this case...
