It includes an introduction to pathophysiology, pharmacology, immunology and microbiology. The unit also focuses on the impact of microorganisms on the health of people and the body’s natural defences, as well as pharmacological interventions, in dealing with infections and injuries and its significance for nursing. 1.2 What is Expected of You Study Load A student is expected to study an hour per credit point a week. For example a 10 credit point unit would require 10 hours of study per week. This time includes the time spent within classes during lectures, tutorials or practicals. Attendance It is strongly recommended that students attend all scheduled learning activities to support their learning. Online Learning Requirements Unit materials

1.1 What is infectious conjunctivitis?
The inflammation of the conjunctiva is caused in the eyes from infectious conjunctiva disease from bacterial or viral pathogens. The symptoms seen in the patients are redness caused by infection, swelling, etc. Pathogen affects the eyes of the patients and forms a transparent and thin layer of tissue on it. This disease is considered as the “pink eye” and children mostly get affected by it (CDC, 2019). The disease can get very severe and could result in a vision issue among children. Chemical, infectious and allergic are three main kinds of conjunctivitis. Allergic conjunctivitis is more likely to be seen in an individual due to change in seasons (Craft & Gordon, 2019). Exposure of a person to substances such as pollen can lead to the trigger of the pink-eye. Bacteria such as influenza, Haemophilias, and Staphylococcus are the main causes of infectious conjunctivitis (AOA, 2019). Varicella, Measles, Herpes simplex as well as very common Adenovirus causes viral infections of conjunctivitis. A further serious bacterial form of conjunctivitis is seen in neonates. If not treated properly, the vision among the child can be damaged permanently due to this. When the disease transmitted sexually such as gonorrhoea or Chlamydia are exposed to neonate, then it results to form severe conjunctivitis.
1.2 Of the four micro-organisms listed below, justify which one is more likely to be the cause of John’s eye infection. Indicate why the other micro-organisms from the list are least likely to cause the infection.
Legionella pneumophila
Yes or no, with reason:
Legionella pneumophila can never be the pathogen according to the case study that has been provided as legionnaires’ disease is caused where lungs are affected.
Plasmodium ovale
Yes or no, with reason:
Tertiary malaria is caused by the pathogen and so cannot cause conjunctivitis among the patient like John.
Adenovirus
Yes or no, with reason:
Conjunctivitis caused by the virus is very contagious and have symptoms such as irritation, watery discharge, photophobia, etc. However, this could not be the pathogen that causes conjunctivitis in the patient because he is in the surroundings of hospital.
Staphylococcus aureus
Yes or no, with reason:
The pathogen is mainly available in the environments of hospitals and various kinds of disease are caused (Boustcha & Nicolle, 1995). One of the diseases among them which causes by Staphylococcus aureus is bacterial borne conjunctivitis. So, it is the most reasonable natural pathogen for patients in the case...
