Introduction One of the challenges of working in a team environment is dealing with a problem team member.  The problem member is that person who whines and complains, displays a controversial attitude in meetings or misses meetings, and exhibits a poor attitude when interacting with other members on the team.  Your initial reaction might be that it is just a part of their personality.  This is a default approach that is not helpful, because one does not change their personality.  With practicing good communication, understanding different perspectives, and listening, you can help this problem member engage in more positive behavior.  For this discussion, read the scenario below and answer the questions in the prompt. Scenario Sarah, a CRM, calls a meeting because she is worried that specific tasks are not being completed in a timely fashion and this could lead to budget concerns.  She has three research assistants and two data analysts in this meeting. Tobin, one of the data analysts, is a genius with numbers and typically over-performs compared to his colleagues. The problem is Tobin can be difficult to work with and his team members have complained that he is overcritical and blames others when problems arise. In the meeting, when Sarah begins to discuss her concerns, Tobin snidely remarks, “Don’t look at me, I do my job. Usually, I am waiting on others.” Throughout the meeting, Tobin taps his pen on the table, makes heavy sighs, and interrupts others when he disagrees with their comments. Sarah knows she needs to have a talk with Tobin, and this will be a difficult conversation.  Once before, she tried to speak with Tobin about his attitude, but it did not go well, and he claimed people complain abut him due to professional jealousy. *** The following questions need to be answered in the same format they are in (numerical format)*** 1. Do you think Tobin has a blind-spot, is he aware of his attitude and nonverbal communication?  2. If Sarah were to turn this into a learning conversation, what questions could she ask Tobin to gain a better understanding of the perceptions and feeling surrounding the team project?  3. Can Sarah help Tobin see an alternative view of his actions? 4. What insight might Tobin be able to share with Sarah on the team performance? 5. Recall the 5 Step Approach to Giving Feedback and write a script of what Sarah should say to Tobin.  5 Step Approach to Giving Feedback: 1. Affirm the good 2. Describe specifically the problem behavior 3. Explain its impact 4. Reset expectations 5. Encourage and offer support

*** The following questions need to be answered in the same format they are in (numerical format)***
1. Do you think Tobin has a blind spot, is he aware of his attitude and nonverbal communication?
