Submission Regulations
1 You are required to submit your coursework on-line through the College’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which can be accessed through http://stpmoodle.net. Detailed information about this is available in the Student Handbook.
2 Details of submission procedures and related course of actions can be obtained from the Academic Administration Department or the Student Handbook.
3 If you are unable to submit your coursework on time due to extenuating circumstances, you are required to make an application to your respective Schools for it to be considered, using an ‘Extenuating Circumstances Form’ available from the Academic Admin Office. Do not ask the lecturers responsible for the course - they are not authorised to award an extension. The completed form must be accompanied by evidence such as a medical certificate in the event of you being sick.

Purpose of Assignment:
The aim of this unit is to provide students with background knowledge and understanding of business, the functions of an organisation and the wider business environments in which organisations operate. Students will examine the different types of organisations (including for profit and not for profit), their size and scope (for instance, micro, SME, transnational and global) and how they operate.
Students will explore the relationships that organisations have with their various stakeholders and how the wider external environments influence and shape business decision-making.
The knowledge, understanding and skill sets gained in this unit will help students to choose their own preferred areas of specialism in future studies and in their professional career.

Task 1
You have been appointed as the Business Advisor by GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK) to investigate different types and sizes of business in the wider business environment in which organisations operate.
You are required to investigate and explain different types of organisations (use a range of examples including for profit, not-for-profit, public and private, small and large organisations) to highlight differences between them. This should include their legal structure, size and scope, as well as their key stakeholders.
Explain the various functions and interrelationships within GSK and how they link to their objectives and structure.
Submission Format:
The submission is in the form of an
individual written report.
The report should
provide a critical analysis of the complexities of different types of business structures and the interrelationships of the different organisational functions.
This should be written in a concise, formal business style using single spacing and font size 12. You are required to make use of headings, paragraphs and subsections as appropriate, and all work must be supported with research and referenced using the Harvard referencing system. Please also provide a bibliography using the Harvard referencing system. The recommended word limit is
2,000–2,500
words, although you will not be penalised for exceeding the total word limit.
Key Points of the report
This will be presented as a report to the CEO and should include the following:
1)
An explanation of types of organisations: purpose, size, scope and legal status including public, private, voluntary and legal structures.
2)
An explanation and critical analysis of how structure, size and scope of different organisations affect business objectives and the products and services offered.
3)
An explanation and analysis of the relationship between different organisational functions, their link to organisational objectives, the advantages and disadvantages of interrelationships between them and the impact that can have upon organisational structure.

Task 2
With reference to Task 1 above, you have been asked to demonstrate both the positive and negative impact the macro environment has on business operations and determine the internal strengths and weaknesses of specific businesses and explain their interrelationship with external macro factors.
Prepare a report which critically evaluates the impacts that both macro and micro factors have upon business objectives and decision-making. The report should cover the following:
1. Using specific examples, identify the positive and negative impacts the macro environment has upon business operations, and apply the PESTLE model to support a detailed analysis of the macro environment of GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK).
2. Conduct internal and external analysis of specific organisations in order to identify strengths and weaknesses and explain how they interrelate with external macro factors. Justify how the strengths and weaknesses influence decision-making using the SWOT model.
