Solution:
The message that need to be transmitted is “ME502 Unit”. There are total 10 different characters that need to be transmitted. The 7-bit ASCII equivalent Binary code is listed below. The ASCII code for the characters have been generated using [1]. For the purpose error detection, we’re using “odd parity” where the added bit is chosen to make the total number of 1’s in the code word odd. Therefore, for each character, the numbers of bits used for encoding is 8. The odd parity bit is added to the right of the ASCII code.
(b) How many bits in total are in the message?
Solution:
The total number of bits used for transmitting the message is 80 bits as shown above in question (a). Out of 8 bits used for the encoding of the characters, 7 bits are the data bits and 1 bit is check bit used for the error detection.
(c) Divide the bit string into m= log2(16)-bit segments. Each of the m-bit segment is a symbol of 16-PAM. How many symbols do you get altogether?
