The Whiteness Project


The Whiteness project is an online interactive documentary produced by PBS. It features white people talking about what it means to be white. Their comments range from one end of the spectrum to the other.


The filmmaker indicated that white people are almost never put in the position of actually thinking about their race, which is one of the reasons for this project. The links provided will take you to two (2) sections of same project. After watching the videos, construct a 3-5 page response paper to project itself, and to the commentary made by participants. Be specific in your comments and cite examples. Use your readings and/or the text as references, as needed. Feel free to bring in outside sources if you choose. It might be helpful for you to look at the demographics of where the participants are from for your analysis. Also post your reaction the project on the appropriate discussion board.

The Whiteness Project: A Response
An online interactive documentary produced by PBS, “The Whiteness Project” should be
considered as a saga composed of different attitudes and approache
s towards interpreting the
phenomenon known as racial identity. The documentary has dealt with different point of views
of different individuals who consider themselves whites, from the racial perspective, and the
documentary has put much emphasis on guiding the audience in the process of realizing how
ethnocentrism can often take the form of a menace, enshrouding rationalism with the clouds of
stereotyping. If on one end of the spectrum there are whites who speak about racial
amalgamation and assimilation, then on the other end of the spectrum there are whites who still
believe in some sort of racial superiority gained in lieu of biologically being born as whites. It is
an interesting documentary that has focused on the dilemmas that are still dominating the
American society that is still striving to be egalitarian in nature.
Learning from the experiences of people like Rob (Whiteness Project, n.d.) one is sure to
find that still the American society is cursed with the evil of discrimination. Rob has spoken his
mind and he has conveyed his confusion in terms of determining whether some specific job roles
are purely structured to utilize the talents and abilities of whites or such domination of white
population in the concerned job sectors is an embodiment of the process of discrimination that
does not allow people of color gaining access to professional and social opportunities (Whiteness
Project, n.d.). If on one hand, Rob’s concern indicates the presence of racial discrimination in the
white-dominated society of the United States, then, on the other hand, his concerns is a reflection
of the fact that still there are innumerable whites who are against racial segregation and
discrimination in the...
