Assignment 3: The Presentation

Objective:
Develop an audio-narrated PowerPoint presentation based on the research you have conducted about your chosen medical condition or disease. The condition I chose was strokes. Please be aware this is a PowerPoint presentation with at least 10-15 slides. It is narrated but once the project is done I will narrate it myself.

Assignment Instructions:
Using the course project steps completed to date, you will develop your presentation based on the work you submitted for Assignments 1 and 2 as well as the feedback you were given.

To prepare for this assignment, I recommend that you do the following:

  • Read these directions carefully.

  • Review the presentation grading rubric below. The grading rubric is a detailed evaluation that I will use to assess your performance. It also will help you understand what is expected of you as you prepare your assignment.

  • Message me with any questions!

Presentation requirements:

  • Your presentation will be submitted as an audio-narrated PowerPoint. For instructions on how to create audio narration in PowerPoint, see the following link:
Record a Slide Show With Narration.
    Audio narration is a requirement!

  • There must be a visual element (e.g., photos, videos, graphs, figures).

  • Yourpresentationmust contain approximately 10-15 slides (excluding references) and run approximately 5-10 minutes.

  • Please note that less than 10% of your presentation should contain direct quotes.

  • Proper use and pronunciation of scientific terminology are required. For help with pronunciation, see this link:
    Meriam-Webster Medical Dictionary

  • Be sure to properly cite your work, both internal to the presentation as well as within the reference slide (this includes photos, graphs, figures, videos, etc.).

  • All references listed on the reference slide should be cited internally within the presentation, and vice versa.

  • You will submit this presentation to your classmates to review and discuss as a part of the Week Eight Forum.

The required elements: Your presentation should contain the following elements in the order listed below.

In addition
, I expect that any feedback provided to you from Assignment 1: Annotated Bibliography and Assignment 2: The Outline be incorporated into this assignment. Please go back and review those comments.
I. Introduction Slide(s) – this section must contain the following: A.
Student Introduction

B.
Topic selection and reason for selecting

C.
Definition of medical condition or disease

D.
History of medical condition or disease

II. Content Slides – this section must contain the following four main subtopics (the subsections below each subtopic are recommendations to use if appropriate to your disease/condition):
A. Statistics/Epidemiology
1. Statistical prevalence (e.g., overall, gender, age) 2. Types of distributions (e.g., frequencies, patterns) 3. Types of determinants (e.g., causes, risk factors) B.
Financial Costs

1. Costs to the individual/family 2. Possible costs to society 3. Loss of productivity C.
Anatomy & Physiology/Etiology

1. The normal and abnormal structure & function behind the disease/condition 2. Cause(s) of the disease/condition D.
Diagnosis/Treatments/Prognosis

1. How this disease/condition is diagnosed (e.g., history, exam, diagnostic imaging, labs) 2. How the condition/disease is treated (e.g., traditional medical treatments, alternative methods of treatment) 3. The prediction of this disease/condition’s outcome III. Conclusion Slide – this section must contain four to six points that sum up the main topics of the presentation. IV. Reference Slide(s) and Internal Citations – this section must contain the following: A.
Internal citations
- This is not just a separate section; rather, referencing should occur throughout the presentation via parenthetical citations anytime you paraphrase, make direct quotes, or use visual components from other sources. Please be sure to cite any language, images, videos, etc. in the presentation that should be cited.
B. Reference Slide
- Your paper should also have a final reference slide listing 5-10 credible sources researched for your presentation.
NOTE: This section is
not
included in the slide count for your presentation.
C. Do not include your summary/evaluation from Assignment 1: Annotated Bibliography; simply list the references utilized in your presentation in APA format on the reference slide.

Medical History and Identification of medical condition:
The patient’s Age: 57
Medical
history: Hypertension, high Blood Pressure, and Diabetic.
Conditions observed post admission:
Blood pressure: 150/90
Pulse: 75
The physical symptoms: Facial droop, slurred speech, no grip, left motor weakness, arm strength was too weak; falls rapidly, and altered sensation.
CT scan report showed Hyperdensity of right middle cerebral artery in the M1 segment.
Medical Condition declared: Ischemic Stroke.
The patient’s age is 57. According to his previous medical reports and medical history he is suffering from hypertension, high Blood Pressure, and Diabetic.

The patient was ambulatory when checked by the attendant for service. After admission, vital tests showed a high blood pressure result of 150/90, Pulse 75. The physical symptoms included facial droop, slurred speech, he had no grip, left motor weakness, arm strength was too weak; falls rapidly, and altered sensation.
CT scan was carried out for further study on the case. The report showed Hyperdensity in the right middle cerebral artery in the M1 segment. There was no other signs but all the examined conditions and signs were suggestive for Ischemic Stroke.

Definition of medical condition
Ischemic stroke is a condition of brain where a cerebrovascular accident restricts the normal flow of blood to the brain.
When the part of the brain stops normal functioning due to deprived of blood, the respective body part also stops responding or functioning eventually.
This loss of blood supply to body parts and brain can be ischemic or hemorrhagic.
Definition of medical condition: Ischemic stroke is a condition of brain where a cerebrovascular accident restricts the normal flow of blood to the brain. When the part of the brain stops normal functioning due to deprived of blood, the respective body part also stops responding or functioning eventually. This loss of blood supply to body parts and brain can be ischemic or hemorrhagic. A stroke is considered to be one of the most emergency cases as it can lead to death, paralysis, comma or permanent disability in many body parts.
4
Epidemiology
Worldwide Statistical prevalence of the condition:
Over 15 million people suffer stroke in each year,
5 million death cases are reported
5 million permanent disabilities due to stroke are recorded.
It is observed that high blood pressure is the main cause causing over 12.7 million strokes worldwide per year.
As ageing is one of the main causes of stroke, the overall number of incidents due to stroke remains high.
Occurrences:
Occurs at any age due to hypertension, smoking, blood pressure but chances increases after age of 55.
Worldwide Statistical prevalence of the condition:
According to the World Health Report of 2002 by World Health Organization, it was estimated that over 15 million people suffer stroke in each year, out of which 5 million death cases are reported also 5 million permanent disabilities due to stroke are recorded.
It is observed that high blood pressure is the main cause of this causing over 12.7 million strokes worldwide per year.
The average number of death in Europe is 650,000 per year.
As ageing is one of the main causes of stroke, the overall number of incidents due to stroke remains high.
Incidences:
Strokes can occur at any age due to many reasons and factors. However, studies show that the chances of having stroke increases significantly after the age of 55.
However, due to external factors, usage of tobacco and drugs can also affect the condition. It is also seen that one fourth of people under the age of 65 are victimised by stroke.
Researches showed that Smoking doubles the risk of stroke.
Strokes can happen to the entire population regardless of their geographical, physical, mental condition or even it’s not age or gender specific.
However, from past studies it has been observed that it occurs to men upto the age of 75 whereas, in women the age group is greater than 85 (Roth, G. A, 2015).

Types of Stroke
Divided into three types according to the physiology:
Ischemc Stroke: When a blood vessel which supplies blood is obstructed or clogged.
Hemorrhagic Stroke: the blood vessels connecting to brain are ruptured and the bleeding causes other adjacent blood vessels irregular in their functioning.
Transient ischemic attack is a mini stroke or a mild attack which is same as the ischemic stroke but here, the stroke resolves quickly
Strokes is the irregular blood supply of brain or to brain that can restrict the functioning of brain and thus lead to stop the functioning of body parts. It is divided into three types according to the physiology of the condition.
