Response to the Questions
Question 1
Igniting change the report templates the fact that even after an extensive technological advancement people are dying just because of unhealthy practices of cooking
. It is unfortunate to note that almost half of the world's population cooks food by burning wood and other biomasses in open fires or rudimentary cookstoves. This proves to be extensively hazardous to health and quiet, unfortunately, leading to premature deaths and chronic illness. It is a disheartening fact to note that these practices of cooking are inefficient, unhealthy, and unsafe. It is associated with more profound impacts on women and girls because they are responsible for cooking and providing a meal to the family. This compels them to collect wood or fuel for the purpose of cooking and it reflects the loss of human resources, on the time spent for collecting fuel.
Thus health hazard and economic hazard both contemplate the fact that inefficient cooking methods are ruining several social aspects. This practice of inefficient cooking is also aligned with the environmental hazards that lead to the depletion of ecosystems and forests due to the burning of fuels and deforestation respectively. The emission of greenhouse gases because of these unhealthy cooking practices is also a major concern (Stevens et al., 2021). Apparent climatic changes owing to the emission of black carbon also mobilized the researcher to study the negative impacts and unhealthy factors of inefficient cooking methods.
Contemplating the above factors researchers introduced the need for cleaner and efficient cooking methods such that it addresses economic, health, and the environmental aspects of the society. The report addresses the immediate need for an innovative energy-efficient cooking practices that will reduce not only the negative environmental hazard but also sustain the economic and physical well-being of the individuals in the society. It proposes the need for "life saving" and "life changing" innovation that is not only affordable but also healthy. Further addresses the need for innovative business models to co-ordinate a proper international approach to reach out to the victims of these unclean cooking methods. Therefore the central theme of the report Igniting Change is the global alliance of providing cleaning stoves for healthy and safe cooking practices.
Question 2
According to the reports of the World Health Organization around 3 million people across the developing countries traditional methods of cooking on an open flame or crude cook stove that uses solid fuels like wood or coal. It is evident to note that use of modern cook stoves is even considered to be a luxury in the developed country. Therefore in the case of the developing country, it is far more expensive and really not affordable for people to replace their traditional cookstoves in spite of the fact that these traditional cook stoves and open fires happens to be a silent killer. More significantly in the sub Saharan African and Asian continent the lack of access to clean cook stoves and fuels. This has forced a significant part of the urban population and the maximum part of the rural population to depend on traditional cooking methods to cook their meals. Besides economic factors, there are cultural factors that drive the population of the developing world to depend upon traditional methods of cooking. More significantly in the African and Asian continent, traditional methods of cooking are practiced even where there is access to electricity or LPG. Therefore the use of efficient clean cook stoves is an important issue persisting in developing countries.
Question 3
The use of clean cook stoves has a significant correlation with the prevalence of poverty in an economy. It is evident to note that traditional cooking methods are time consuming and energy consuming. Besides the fact that the uses of traditional cook stoves are associated with a long-term chronic health hazard. Hence, the use of clean cook stoves can reduce the medical cost incurred.
Tradition methods of cooking and open fire methods of cooking are time consuming and laborious activities. Therefore the prevalence of clean cook stoves can reduce the extensive wastage of human resources which can be used for the economic purpose and thereby reducing the poverty. The time spent in collecting food often leaves less time to work in fields, or start a small business or engage in other pursuits that could bring much needed money to the household. Therefore, it is evident that traditional methods of cooking are making women unable to spend time generating income or expanding their educational opportunities because they spent more time collecting fuel which has further embedded them in the cycle of poverty.
Therefore the report of "Igniting change" gives convincing and comprehensive details of how important clean cook stoves are in the process of reduction of poverty.
