Quality matters: Hospital at home program in New Mexico improves care quality and patient 
satisfaction while reducing costs  
Executive summary 
Principle of TQM (Total Quality Management) is recognized by manufacturer in US for products 
– same they attempt  in health care specially in Mexico. A new program started in Albuquerque, 
New Mexico  to improve patient satisfaction in term of reduced cost and long stay in hospital, 
and meet demand supply in term of available beds and population. Program is to provide health 
care at patient home instead of hospital. 
Key issues 
The hospitals in US is struggling with  shortages of bed with increased demand of hospital in age 
of dwindling public spending. To ensure proper access to health care, health care system leaders 
are debating and looking or new creative idea to care for patients. Hospital at home program is 
designed for patient, to provide care service to them at their homes only  who might otherwise 
need to hospitalized. It will reduce demand for hospitalization and also reduce cost to patient by 
at least 30%. 
Situation analysis  
With due shortage of bed in hospitals, new system of hospital at home is broadly adopted by 
health system in US and UK as well. The reason for UK is somehow different as UK is suffering 
from shortage of manpower facility and other problems like falls and injuries due to 
unresponsive staff, some time medication error also caused by doctors. 
Overview of organization and leadership 
In Albuquerque Presbyterian health care services (PHS) is one of leader in this kind of integrated 
delivery system. PHS provides care to more than 750,000patients from its network of eight 
hospitals and 34 locations state wide, home care services and inpatient and outpatient throughout 
New Mexico.
