Being prepared to mitigate disasters in business is crucial for the business success. But
many companies are unprepared. Usually, the companies that have already faced any disaster are
better prepared to mitigate disaster risk. The disasters reflect the need for accountability and
responsibility of employees, local coordination and strategic plan to be prepared to face any
disaster or crisis. The case discusses the preparedness to mitigate a crisis related to natural
disaster – flood. To be prepared involves activities to response fast and effectively and building
capability to deal with disaster. The businesses are more and more emphasizing on recovery
preparedness which helps the company not only to recover quickly after a disaster has occurred
but also to overcome recovery challenges and remain successful in the short term as well as long
term (Sutton & Tierney, 2006). The essay identifies and explains the disaster preparedness
activities a business could undertake.
From the different options mentioned in the case in concern, preparedness activities a business
could undertake are as below.
- Business continuity plan:
Disruption in business due to disaster leads to financial loss of the business. Revenue
loss and reduced profits are the financial losses. All insurance policies do not cover damage from
flood. Customers move to the competitors. To protect a company from these losses Business
Continuity Plan is important. Preparing the Business continuity plan requires analysis of impact
of critical functions and business operations and the resources required to run those functions.
The company needs to identify, and draft a plan to be implemented for recovery of the crucial
business functions (Sutton & Tierney, 2006). A team of employees is designated to draft the
business continuity plan and ensure running of the crucial functions. For effective
implementation of the plan the employees are trained on the plan. Information technology, both
hardware and software, are important for a business to perform productively. So the business
recovery plan includes recovery strategy of information technology for the companies.
