Assignment 2—Data Collection, Description and Analysis: Identifying key themes from your data

This assignment allows you to put into practice some of the research methods you have been learning about.

Read McNaughton (2013) and Armstrong’s (2014) studies. In the tutorial we will construct a series of open-ended questions that you can use to explore your informant’s perceptions of type two diabetes mellitus.

You will:

  1. Conduct a focus group with 4-5 people you know, who do not have type 2 diabetes using the questions developed in the tutorial.

  2. Choose 4-5 people who work in health in some capacity OR 4-5 people who do not- but not both.

  3. Provide them with the Ethics Information page and if willing to participate, they will sign an Informed Consent Form – these have been posted to FLO.

  4. Record basic demographic information: age, gender, country of birth, country of current residence, works in health (now or in the past), does not work in health (now or in the past), highest educational qualification.

  5. The focus group should run for one hour and will need to be audio taped.

  6. After the focus group, make field notes that describe the context in which your focus group took place; record your thoughts, feelings and impressions of the interactions. In other words, how you felt about the focus group; record your observations—your doubts, anxieties, even joys or pleasures!

  7. Transcribe the audiotape of the focus group (remember to change the names of respondents).

  8. Analyse and code the transcript and identify emerging concepts or themes.

Your assignment will be in the form of a report. In your assignment:

  1. Write an introduction, setting, method and results section and make sure you including the themes you identified in your analysis.

  2. Provide an interpretation of your results in the discussion section

  3. Reflect briefly on the process and dynamics of the FG based on your field notes.

  4. You will also need to and submit a copy of your coded focus group transcript with you report.

Criteria for Grading

It will be marked on the following criteria, the extent to which:

  • The quality of the interviewing, probing and discussion generated

  • The themes or concepts that emerge from the interview transcript are congruent with an overall coding scheme.

  • The extent to which you have moved from description of the data to coding, analysis and interpretation

  • Field notes provide a rich account of your perceptions of the methodological issues experienced (positives and negatives).

  • Your report is clearly written with accurate spelling, grammar and sentence construction.

Introduction
Diabetes mellitus type 2 is one of the most emerging health threats being faced by the world today. Blood sugar is one of the most underrated parameters in the world (McNaughton, 2013). Regarded as a lifestyle disease, the effects of this disease is multifaceted and widespread making the control and mitigation of the disease challenging. The most important step in the control and prevention of any disease would entail spreading awareness among the people about the seriousness of the disease (Armstrong and Taylor, 2014). The following report encompasses an investigation, which was conducted to investigate the perceptions of a group of individuals on diabetes mellitus 2 as well as infer the present state of management in the field of diabetes.
Setting
For the selection of the focus groups, a few factors were decided upon. The focus group was decided to be inclusive of 5 healthcare workers, who did not have diabetes mellitus type 2. The healthcare organisations and diagnostic centres were visited to sample the relevant partakers through convenient, non-probability sampling technique. As noted by Rosenthal (2016), there were consent and ethics forms prepared suggesting that the participation in the interview by the individuals would be on their free will and that there was no enforcing from our side. Prior permission was taken from the interviewees and their availabilities noted to schedule the meeting as per their convenience.
Method
The focus group selected for this study included individuals who belonged to the healthcare sector. As suggested by Taylor et al. (2015), the participants were selected by the convenient non-probability method. Two among them, Mrs A and Mrs B were nurses with the same healthcare agency. The third individual, Mr. X was a pathologist who was had his own diagnostic centre. The fourth participant, Mrs Y was a physiotherapist whereas the fifth participant, Mr. Z was a general physician at a healthcare centre. The nurses were interviewed face-to-face on the same day whereas the interview for Mr. X and Mrs Y were conducted on separate days at their workplaces. Mr. Z was attending an international conference. Therefore, a Skype interview was conducted for him.
