Introduction
Based on the biography of John Nash, a talented mathematician who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, the film "A Beautiful Mind" tells his story. His battle with the sickness and its effects on his life, family, and community are depicted in the movie. This essay will utilize John Nash as a case study to examine his mental condition and how it affected him, his family, and the community as a whole.
Aetiology and Pathophysiology of Schizophrenia in John Nash
Schizophrenia is a complicated and serious mental illness that has an impact on a person's thoughts, feelings, and actions. Schizophrenia's aetiology and pathophysiology are not fully known, although current peer-reviewed literature indicates that a mix of genetic, environmental, and neurodevelopmental variables may be involved. The onset of schizophrenia is significantly influenced by genetic factors. According to family and twin studies, those who have a first-degree relative who has the disease are more likely to get it than people in general[footnoteRef:2]. If a parent or sibling is the afflicted family member, the risk is considerably greater. According to estimates, schizophrenia has a heritability of 80%, meaning there is a significant hereditary component to the condition. Additionally, environmental variables including infections, drug use during pregnancy, and prenatal and postnatal problems might raise the chance of developing schizophrenia. For instance,[footnoteRef:3] found a link between maternal influenza exposure during pregnancy and a higher risk of schizophrenia in the children. According to[footnoteRef:4], cannabis usage in adolescence has also been related to a higher risk of schizophrenia later in life. Schizophrenia may also arise as a result of neurodevelopmental causes. The symptoms of schizophrenia can be brought on by abnormalities in brain development during foetal and early childhood development, which can affect brain structure and function[footnoteRef:5]. Areas of the brain that have been linked to the pathology of schizophrenia include the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala. Neurotransmitter abnormalities including dopamine, glutamate, and GABA have a role in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. The neurotransmitter most closely linked to positive signs of schizophrenia, such delusions and hallucinations, is dopamine. Schizophrenia patients have been found to have abnormal dopamine receptors and transporters[footnoteRef:6]. An excitatory neurotransmitter necessary for memory and learning is glutamate. Schizophrenia has been linked to malfunctioning NMDA receptors, which are important in glutamate transmission[footnoteRef:7]. Cognitive impairments and changes in brain plasticity may be brought on by this disorder. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that controls the excitability of neurons. Schizophrenia has also been linked to abnormalities in GABAergic transmission, notably in the prefrontal cortex. The processing of thoughts and emotions may change as a result of this disorder.
