Assignment 1 Due: Thursday 29 November 2018 Length: 2,500 words Weighting: 25% For this assignment you will have to prepare a paper that critically discusses how organisations apply the strategic use of IS/IT to achieve IS/IT-enabled innovation (Note: you should try to focus on information systems rather than mobile apps and social media platforms & applications). Some aspects and issues you may discuss in your paper could include (but are not limited to): • Discuss at least 4 examples of the use of IS/IT for innovation. • Highlight some success factors or some lessons learned (i.e., what went wrong?) for your Assessment Group/ individual Learning outcomes Grading indicator Min Score Weight Length/ duration Due Professional accreditation Report Individual 1, 2, 5 Graded N/A 25% - 29 Nov NA 2018 11:00 PM examples. Assessment | 9 • Discuss the impacts of internal factors (e.g., organisational, individual, and management factors) and external factors (e.g., market, industry, social, economic, technological and political/policy factors) on the success (or the failure) of IS/IT enabled innovation. • Suggest recommendations and guidelines for helping organisations succeed in their efforts to embark on using IS/IT for innovation with good explanation and discussion. You should apply relevant knowledge discussed in your unit. You should prepare for this assignment by reviewing the literature (i.e. by using ProQuest 5000 and Science Direct databases at http://www.scu.edu.au/library/index.php/) and searching the World Wide Web (i.e. via Google). You should show evidence that you have read at least 10 references, which must be published after January 2012, in the literature (including references from academic and professional publications) to prepare this assignment. A variety of references are expected including books, refereed journals, case studies, newspapers, magazines and electronic references. Format for Assignment 1 You will be marked on communication as well as content. This is done to emphasise the importance of aiming for effective communication as well as good content – not only here in a university assignment, but also in your day-to-day work. After all, if you do not communicate and present your ideas well, it is much harder to have your ideas accepted by busy colleagues or executives. Your assignment should contain: • Title page • Table of contents • Introduction • Main body of report with suitable headings and subheadings • Conclusions • Reference list • Appendices (if relevant). References: Harvard Referencing Style is required in this subject. Please visit SCU Library website for information (URL: http://www.scu.edu.au/library/finding_info/citing_info.html). You can also contact SCU librarians for assistance. Marking criteria for Assignment 1 The following specific marking criteria will be used for marking Assignment 1: Category Specific criteria Maximum marks MC 1: Content – clear Critically discuss at least 4 examples of organisational 4 understanding of issues (18 attempts at achieving IS/IT enabled innovation. Use of IS/IT for Innovation
Information technology relates to use of computers and software for information managing. It is also known as Management Information Services (MIS) or Information Services (IS). The information technology is responsible for storing, infor
mation, processing and transmitting information as required and retrieving it when needed (Axelby, 2013). IS/IT develops services, products, capacities and strategic gains for innovations to companies. Knowledge Management System of IT/IS application used for innovation in managing services and decision making (Allred & Swan, 2014). KMS is utilized for innovation of high quality, reliable and high quantity of data management services.
Information Technology is used for innovation of product and services can be used to build strategic IS/IT application for strengthening business planning and strategies and support corporate innovation (Bosun, et al., 2014). Information Communication Technology gives knowledge to organizations as they generate meaningful customer data. Customer data is collected every time a customer interacts with the system and is analysed in International Journal of Managing Public Sector Information and Communication Technologies (IJMPICT) (Anzola-Román, et al., 2018). IJMPICT together can seek information for the organizations in order to establish the business intelligence applications. Transportation companies are able to enhance their customer service system through the IS/IT communicating interruptions system to use in cars and buses. The schedule depends on the availability of drivers, weather conditions, and numbers of traffics present and also for safety purposes. Passengers and customers to avail or travelling in the vehicles can inform about the position of the vehicle waiting for some reason. The main intention of such IT/IS enabled innovation in the cars and bus system was to inform parents in advance regarding any possible delays that might occur in the bus schedule for schools (Maier, 2013). Google also linked IT innovations to its business operations. IT technologies like the AJAX are integrated into Google maps. Ajax integration enables Google API’s map to zoom and other features without refreshing page which as a result made Google Map the only competitor in online map. Automation System for Architectural Practices (ASAP) and Multi-phase Integrated Automation System (MITOS) are IT/IS enabled for innovation used in the construction companies for the quick access of correct and up-to-date information (Bosun, et al., 2014). Data storage, sharing information, timely communication, reducing costs and less use of paper can be done through this system. MITOS system has integrated material supplier database and helps in the sharing of the updated information often without taking much time (Axelby, 2013). “Just In Time System” of IT/IS enables managing the supply chain effectively by many manufacturing and distribution companies. Required materials can be supplied by suppliers just before the stock finishes. This leads to shortening of the lead time and reduces inventory accumulation and better supply chain management (Cairns, 2017). Web 2.0 strategically used to promote growth. The Web 2.0 is used for the social networking sites of the information which are related to the business and profit and helps in business growth (Han & Cho, 2014). RFID and Bluetooth are the IS/IT enabled innovation which is used in the information system for the tracking of the position of goods and its status during transportation and delivery in tracking system (Carl & R Varian, 2013). Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) is another IT enabled innovation which restricts users to be able to read e-books in a different platform. Different companies are highly dependent on the Internet technologies and its services to integrate and manage their business processes as it has the information-processing ability for dealing with different groups of customers at the same time via the customer relationship management system. Computer Aided Design of IT enabled systems could change the operational ability and improve it through increasing accuracy, speed and reducing costs in innovative manners. IT/IS applications are also used for strategic advantage in order to lower the lead time and managing resources and warehouse goods effectively (Erbe, 2014). Microsoft Dynamics GP enterprise resource management software and Microsoft Dynamic CRM implementation in the different companies connects customers to the company’s database which helps to manage and deal with customers effectively by understanding there requirement.
Success factors
Nowadays it is impossible for industries to survive without the use of the IS/IT system it its operation and business. The IT enabled innovation systems applied in the organization contributes to the success of the organization as customers are also involved actively in the system (Carl & R Varian, 2013). The system is strategically used at the right time. The feedback and information provided by the customers helps in the suitable analysis of the work processes, resources use and timescale which provides base for the continuous changes and improvement in the business and operation. The success of the IT/IS in innovation is due to the applications of the IT system in the business strategies and factors like features, durability, performance, services, reliability and different departments of business to maintain quality and quantity. IT/IS success is due to is supportive system abilities to meet strategic objectives like redesigning of the innovative application like the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Managing Information Services...
